Most "arrowheads" are not arrowheads

The bow reaches North America only around 1500 years ago. Everything older than that — which is the large majority of what anybody picks up — was thrown, not shot: atlatl dart points and spear points, tens of thousands of years of them. A Clovis point is 13,000 years old and had no bow to be shot from.

The discriminator archaeologists use is neck width — the narrowest part of the hafting area — because that is what has to fit into a shaft. Arrow shafts are thin and dart shafts are not, so it separates the two populations far better than overall length does. The working cutoff is about 9.5 mm. It is a boundary between two overlapping populations rather than a wall, so anything within a millimetre of it is reported here as borderline rather than decided.

The find spot is worth more than the find

A point in the ground carries its own date: the layer it sits in, what lies around it, how deep it is. Picked up and put in a tin, it becomes a pretty stone with an unknown age and an unknown story — and that information does not come back. This is not sentiment. It is why archaeology records position to the centimetre, and why a photograph in place with something for scale is worth more than the object on a shelf.

If you find something fluted, or human remains, or anything that looks like a concentration rather than a stray, the useful thing to do is stop, photograph, note the position and contact your state archaeologist. Those finds genuinely matter, and they matter most where they lie.

Is it even a fossil?

A better first question than "what species". These look-alikes are found far more often than the things they resemble, and they are what museums are handed most.

"I only took one" is not a defence and is the commonest thing people say. If you are not certain whose land you are on, you do not know whether you are committing a felony — and land ownership on the ground is very often not what it looks like from a trail.

How to use

  1. Check whose land you are on before you pick anything up.
  2. Measure the neck, not the length — it is the better discriminator.
  3. Photograph anything unusual in place, with something for scale.
  4. Ask whether it is organic at all before asking what species.

What is an atlatl?

A throwing stick that extends the arm, letting a hunter launch a light spear — a dart — with far more force than by hand. It is tens of thousands of years older than the bow and was the main projectile weapon for almost all of human history in the Americas. Its darts needed thick shafts, which is what the neck width is measuring.

Why does it matter where I found it?

Because the location IS the information. A point in the ground carries its own date in the layer it sits in, what lies around it and how deep it is. Picked up and pocketed, it becomes a pretty stone of unknown age with an unknown story, and that cannot be reconstructed. What should I do if I find something significant?

A fluted point, human remains, or any concentration rather than a stray find is genuinely important — and it is most important where it lies. Nobody will be angry with you for reporting something.

Is this rock a fossil?

Ask that before asking what species, because look-alikes are found far more often than the real thing. Dendrites look like ferns and are mineral crystallisation on a rock face. Concretions look like eggs, bones and skulls and are lumps of cemented sediment. Both are what museums get handed most.

How do I tell a concretion from a fossil bone?

Break or examine a chipped edge. Real bone has visible internal structure — a spongy core, growth lines, a distinct outer layer. A concretion is uniform sediment throughout, usually too symmetrical, and has no bone texture anywhere. If it looks like a perfect egg, it is almost certainly a concretion.

What is a trace fossil?

Evidence of behaviour rather than the organism itself — burrows, tracks, borings, coprolites. They are scientifically valuable precisely because body fossils cannot tell you what an animal did, and they are routinely thrown away as "just a rock" by people who would have kept a shell without a second thought.
