Four splits in five do not add up

$100 split three ways is $33.33 each. Three times $33.33 is $99.99, and the missing penny is not in anybody's hand. It goes the other way too, and more often — $100 across seven is $14.29 each, and seven of those collects $100.03.

Sweeping every amount from $1.00 to $200.00 in one-cent steps against party sizes from 2 to 12 — 218,911 combinations in all — 177,053 do not add up, which is 80.9%. It over-collects 98,954 times and under-collects 78,099. The worst case in that range is 6 cents, at $1.02 split 12 ways.

This is not a rare corner, it is the normal outcome, and the only reason it goes unnoticed is that a few cents at a restaurant table is nobody's problem. Some splits are exact — $100 across four is $25 each and adds up perfectly — which is precisely what makes the failures hard to spot: the tool looks right whenever you happen to check it with an easy number.

The fix is three lines and it is exact

Work in whole cents. Divide, take the floor, and hand the remainder out one penny at a time:

Checked over 220,000 splits, it sums to the bill every single time, and nobody ever pays more than one penny more than anybody else.

That second property is what makes it fair rather than merely correct. There is no way to split $100 three ways into equal amounts, so somebody has to pay more. The only question is whether that is one visible penny or whether the difference is quietly dropped on the floor and made up by whoever is holding the card.

Weighted splits fail the same way, less predictably

Note which one breaks. $100 split 1:1:2 comes out $25, $25 and $50 and is perfect; the same $100 split 1:1:1 loses a penny. The awkward-looking weights are not the dangerous ones — it fails whenever the weights do not divide the total, which is most of the time and is impossible to eyeball from the numbers you typed.

The splitter above now hands the pennies out both ways — remainder-first for an even split, largest-remainder for shares — so what it shows you adds up to the bill exactly, and it says who is carrying the odd cent rather than quietly rounding it away. That is the whole difference: the arithmetic was never wrong, it was the last cent that had nowhere to go.

Frequently asked questions

Should tax and tip be split evenly even if the bill is not?

Proportionally is the fairer approach — someone whose share of the food was double should carry double the tax and tip, since both scale with the bill. Splitting the extras evenly while itemising the food quietly favours the bigger orders.

What do we do about the odd penny?

Somebody has to take it, and the tidy solution is to round each share up to the nearest sensible unit and let the small surplus go to the tip. Chasing exact pennies across a table costs more goodwill than it saves.

How should we handle shared items?

Divide them among the people who actually shared them, then add each person's own items. Starters and bottles of wine are the usual complication, and deciding before ordering is considerably easier than deciding afterwards.

Is splitting evenly unfair?

Sometimes, and it depends on the group. Among friends eating similarly it is simplest and nobody minds. It becomes a genuine issue when one person had significantly less, or is not drinking — in which case saying so at the start is much easier than raising it at the end.

What about someone who is not drinking?

Splitting the drinks separately from the food is the usual solution, and it is worth offering rather than waiting to be asked. Alcohol is frequently the largest single variable on a group bill.

Does the calculation include service charges?

Only if you enter them. Where a service charge has already been added, adding a tip on top is not expected — checking the bill before calculating avoids paying twice, which is the most common error on a group bill abroad.
