Guideline heights from nib widths — and why five nib widths is a ratio rather than a size, spanning ten times the height across common nibs.
Nib-width counts vary between hands and between teachers, and the ones here are defaults rather than doctrine — use whatever your exemplar specifies. What does not vary is that they are counts and not millimetres. Nothing is uploaded.
"Five nib widths" is not a size
Every vertical distance in broad-edge lettering is counted in nib widths, which is what lets a hand keep its proportions at any scale. It also means the instruction says nothing about how big the letters are: 5 nib widths is 2.5 mm on a 0.5 mm nib and 25 mm on a 5 mm one, and both are correctly written.

The whole rhythm scales together — a line is always 13 nib widths tall whatever nib is in the pen — which is exactly the point of the convention and exactly why the page fills up so differently. The finest nib fits 38 lines where the broadest fits 3.
So both numbers have to be stated, and the useful question runs backwards
Changing the hand changes the size just as surely as changing the nib. At one fixed nib, a three-nib hand and a nine-nib hand are a factor of three apart. So neither number alone tells you anything — and the question worth asking is which nib gives the height you want, which is the same arithmetic inverted.

Note the last column does not keep pace with the third: tripling the x-height moves the line spacing by less than three, because the ascenders and descenders are counted separately and do not move when the x-height does. A taller hand is a taller x-height inside roughly the same envelope, which is what makes it look airy rather than simply bigger.

How do I work out calligraphy guidelines?
Multiply the nib width by the nib-width count your hand specifies. An x-height of five nib widths on a 1.5 mm nib is 7.5 mm, and every other vertical distance is worked out the same way.
Why are heights measured in nib widths?
Because it is what makes a hand a hand: the proportions stay fixed and the size becomes whatever the nib makes it. Write the same hand with a bigger nib and every relationship on the page is preserved.
So how big are five nib widths?
That is the catch — it is not a size at all. Five nib widths is 2.5 mm on a 0.5 mm nib and 25 mm on a 5 mm nib, a factor of ten, and both are correctly written. The count and the nib both have to be stated.
How far apart should I rule the lines?
Add the x-height, ascender, descender and whatever gap you want between lines, all in nib widths, then multiply by the nib. With the defaults here that is thirteen nib widths from baseline to baseline.
What nib do I need for a particular height?
Divide the height you want by the nib-width count. A 9 mm x-height in a five-nib hand needs a 1.8 mm nib — which is usually the question people actually have, and it is the same arithmetic run backwards.
Does a taller hand scale the whole page?
Not in proportion. Tripling the x-height moves the line spacing by less than three, because ascenders and descenders are counted separately and do not move with it. A taller hand is a taller x-height inside roughly the same envelope.
