Almost every question about how a bike rides comes back to two numbers, and both are routinely set wrong. Tyre pressure is the first. The figure that matters is tyre drop β€” how far the tyre squashes under load, around 15 per cent β€” and holding that constant means the front and rear need genuinely different pressures, because a seated rider puts roughly 55 per cent of their weight on the back wheel. Running both ends the same guarantees one of them is wrong, and it is usually the front, which ends up harsh and short of grip. Width matters more than anything else here: moving from 25 mm to 32 mm cuts the correct pressure by about a third, so fitting wider tyres and keeping the old pressure produces a bike that rides worse than it did before. Gearing is the second. Gear inches collapses chainring, sprocket and wheel size into one comparable number, which is the only way to tell whether a new cassette actually changes anything β€” and it usually reveals that a double chainset carries several pairs of gears within a few per cent of each other, steps too small to feel and therefore gears you have paid for and cannot use.
