About these electronics tools
Two things on this bench are worth getting exactly right rather than approximately right, and both are here. Resistor colour codes have an unforgiving property: a decoder that quietly accepts an impossible band combination will confidently report a value for a part that does not exist, which is worse than refusing to answer. So the tool here refuses gold as a digit and orange as a tolerance, and it tells you whether the value it read is a standard E12 or E24 part β because resistors are only manufactured in defined value sets, which means a reading of 3.7 kΞ© almost certainly indicates a misread band rather than an unusual component. That check catches more errors than careful squinting does. Ohm's law is the other, and the useful thing to know about it is how little there is to learn: the twelve formulas printed on every wheel chart are V = IR and P = VI rearranged, four quantities with two degrees of freedom. It is also not a law of nature but an observation about materials that happen to have constant resistance over a useful range β diodes, transistors and filament lamps are all deliberately non-ohmic, and a filament's resistance climbs several-fold as it heats.
