About these puzzle makers tools

A generated puzzle is worthless until somebody has solved it, and that is the one thing most puzzle generators skip. It is easy to place words in a grid, scatter numbers across a Sudoku or turn a picture into a row of nonogram clues. It is much harder to guarantee that what comes out can actually be finished, and harder still to guarantee it can be finished by reasoning rather than by guessing. Those are different standards and the difference is what separates a satisfying puzzle from an infuriating one. A Sudoku with two valid solutions is not a hard Sudoku; it is a broken one, because at some point the solver has to pick a branch at random and hope. A nonogram whose clues admit more than one picture cannot be solved by logic at all. A word search whose word list does not match what is genuinely findable in the finished grid wastes a child's afternoon. So every generator in this category checks its own output by solving it before you ever see it, and throws the puzzle away and starts again when the answer is not unique. Where a tool cannot make that guarantee it says so plainly rather than quietly shipping something ambiguous. The practical consequence is that generating takes a moment longer than it would otherwise, and that is a trade worth making every time, because the failure mode is not a slightly worse puzzle. It is a puzzle that cannot be completed, discovered by the person you handed it to, halfway through.
