Elastic cut to the measurement does nothing

The elastic has to be shorter than the opening, so that it sits under tension when the garment is worn. That tension is the whole point of it. A piece cut to the body measurement is just a band of fabric that happens to stretch — it will hold nothing up, and no amount of good sewing will fix it afterwards.

So the only question is how much shorter, and that is where the usual advice goes wrong.

"Subtract two inches" is not a rule

Two inches off a 26 inch waist is a 7.7% reduction. Two inches off a 12 inch bicep is 16.7% — more than twice the compression, from the same instruction. The fixed subtraction gets weaker as the opening gets bigger and fiercer as it gets smaller, which is exactly backwards from what you want.

Elastic works in percentages, because that is how stretch works. The same percentage gives the same feel at every size, which is why this page asks what the elastic is for rather than assuming one number fits everything.

These are starting points, not constants. Elastics differ enormously in how hard they pull back — braided, knitted and woven behave differently at the same width, and a cheap waistband elastic can be half the strength of a good one. Pin the length round yourself before you sew it down; it costs a minute and it is the only real test.

Ruffles and pleats

The same shape of problem with the sign flipped: a gathered or pleated strip is cut longer than the edge it sews to, by a ratio rather than an allowance.

A pleat costs three times its visible width. A pleat of width w folds back w and forward w again, so a yard of finished knife pleating eats three yards of fabric. That is why pleated skirts are expensive and why running short on one is so common.

Pleats that do not touch cost less. A pleat of depth d repeating every s of finished length adds 2d per repeat, so at 1 inch deep:

The ratio falls towards 1 as the spacing opens, but never reaches it — every pleat costs something. Note that the top row, a 1 inch pleat every 1 inch, is touching knife pleats and comes out at exactly 3:1, which is the same figure by a different route.

Things worth knowing before you cut

  • Necklines have to go over a head. An adult head is around 22 inches, and a neckline that fits the neck may not clear it. Check the stretched length, not the resting one — this page does, if you fill in the head box.
  • Add the overlap on top, never inside. The overlap joins the ends and is consumed by the join, so it is added to the cut length rather than taken out of the working length. Half to one inch is normal; wide elastic wants more.
  • Braided elastic narrows when stretched and should live inside a casing. Knitted and woven elastic keep their width and can be sewn directly to fabric.
  • Do not stretch it while sewing the join. Sew the join flat, then stretch it into the casing. Sewing under tension leaves the seam shorter than the rest and it will be the first thing to fail.
  • Elastic relaxes over time and dies in the wash. Chlorine and hot tumble drying both shorten its life considerably. If a garment's waistband has gone, it is the elastic that has gone, not the sewing.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I cut elastic?

Shorter than the opening, by a percentage of it rather than a fixed amount. A soft waistband wants about 6 per cent off the body measurement, a firm one about 10, a cuff about 12. Then add half an inch to an inch on top for overlapping and joining the ends.

What happens if I cut it to the measurement?

Nothing, which is the problem. Elastic works by sitting under tension when the garment is worn, and a piece cut to the exact measurement applies no tension at all — it is just a band of fabric that happens to stretch. It will not hold anything up and no amount of careful sewing afterwards will fix it.

Is "subtract two inches" a good rule?

No, because it is a different amount of compression at every size. Two inches off a 26 inch waist is a 7.7 per cent reduction; two inches off a 12 inch bicep is 16.7 per cent, more than twice as tight. Why percentages instead?

How much overlap do I need to join the ends?

Half an inch to an inch for most elastic, more for wide waistband elastic. It is added on top of the working length, not taken out of it, because the overlap is consumed by the join. Sew it flat with a box or a zigzag before stretching it into the casing.

Will my neckline go over my head?

What is the difference between braided, knitted and woven elastic?

Braided narrows when stretched and should live inside a casing rather than being sewn directly to fabric. Knitted keeps its width, is soft, and can be stitched down. Woven is the strongest and holds up to heavy use, which is why it is used in waistbands that take real strain. They are not interchangeable at the same width.

How much fabric does a ruffle need?

A ratio of the finished edge, not an allowance. One and a half to one gives a soft wave, two to one is a standard ruffle, three to one is very full and needs light fabric. Multiply the finished edge length by the ratio to get the strip length to cut.

How much fabric do pleats take?

Three times their visible width, when the pleats touch. A pleat of a given width folds back that width and forward again, so a yard of finished knife pleating eats three yards of fabric. Box and inverted box pleats work out the same — the underfolds are just arranged differently.

Do spaced pleats use less?

Yes. A pleat of depth d repeating every s of finished length adds 2d per repeat, so the ratio is s plus 2d, all over s. A one inch pleat every four inches is 1.5 to 1 rather than 3 to 1. The ratio falls towards 1 as the spacing opens up but never reaches it, because every pleat costs something.

Why has the elastic in an old garment gone slack?

Elastic degrades. It relaxes with age and use, and chlorine and hot tumble drying shorten its life considerably. When a waistband gives out it is almost always the elastic rather than the sewing, which is why replacing it is usually a repair worth doing.
