How much frosting a cake needs — where the sides overtake the top at exactly a quarter of the diameter, and frosting does not scale like cake.
This covers the top and the sides — not the base, and not the filling between layers, which is a separate job and usually a thinner one. Three grams per square inch is a workable coat; a crumb coat is nearer one and a heavy decorative finish can be double. Make extra regardless, because a piping bag and a spatula both keep some. The sides overtake the top at exactly a quarter of the diameter
Frosting is a surface problem. The top is πd²/4 and the side is πdh, and those are equal when h = d/4 — exactly, with no rounding in it anywhere. Two inches on an eight-inch cake, two and a half on a ten. So a shallow single layer is 33.3% sides and a six-inch-tall cake is 75%, and the shape of the cake decides where the work goes.

At 2 inches the two are exactly equal, and that quarter-of-the-diameter rule holds at every size — which makes it one of the few things in baking you can work out in your head and be exactly right about.

And frosting does not scale like cake
Going from an eight-inch to a ten at the same height gives 56.25% more cake but only 35.4% more frosting, because the top grows as the square while the side grows only in step with the diameter. Which also means the mix shifts: a wider cake is proportionally more top, and a taller one more sides.

An eight-inch four-inch-tall cake wants about 452 g — roughly a batch of buttercream from 225 g of butter. The usual advice to make half again as much as you think is answering a question that depends entirely on how tall you built it.

Why a quarter of the diameter?
Because the top is pi d squared over four and the side is pi d h, and those are equal when h is d over four. The pi and one of the d cancel, so the answer is the same simple fraction at every size.
How much of the surface is sides?
A third for a single one-inch layer, exactly half at two inches, two thirds at four, and three quarters by six. A tall narrow cake is almost all sides.
Does a bigger cake need proportionally more frosting?
Less than you would think. Going 8 to 10 inches is 56% more cake but only about 40% more frosting, because the top grows as the square while the side grows only in step with the diameter.
