Why 30 degrees, and why it is not a style preference
The two suspension lines have to hold you up between them, but each line only pulls upward by the sine of its angle. So the tension in each line is your weight divided by twice that sine. At 30 degrees the sine is exactly one half, the division cancels, and each line carries precisely your body weight — no multiplication at all.
Pull it tighter and the sine shrinks fast. At 10 degrees each line is carrying nearly three times your body weight, and at 5 degrees more than five times. That is why straps snap, carabiners bend and branches come down on flat hangs rather than saggy ones — the failures happen to people trying to make the hammock look tidy.
The comfort argument points the same way. A tight hammock squeezes your shoulders and forces you into a banana shape. A deeper curve gives you enough fabric to lie diagonally, which is the only way to get flat in a hammock. More sag genuinely means a flatter lie, which is the least intuitive thing about hammocks.
Getting it right in the field
- A structural ridgeline solves it permanently. Set at 83% of the hammock length, it fixes the sag regardless of how far apart the trees are — you get the same lie every night without measuring anything.
- Check the angle with your hand. Thumb up, index finger along the strap: a rough 30 degrees is close enough. Nobody carries a protractor.
- Wider trees need higher straps. The sag is proportional to the span, so the same angle over 18 feet drops you a lot further than over 11.
- Use tree-friendly straps at least an inch wide. Rope and thin cord cut into bark, which is why most parks that allow hammocks specify a minimum strap width.
- Sit height around 18 inches. High enough to get in and out easily, low enough that falling out is uneventful.

It also multiplies the force on the straps and anchors dramatically — as the angle shallows, tension rises sharply, and at very shallow angles it can reach several times your body weight per side.
How do I lie in it properly?
Diagonally, not along the centreline. Lying on the diagonal flattens the hammock under you and lets you sleep nearly level, which is what makes hammocks comfortable rather than banana-shaped. People who try one and find it uncomfortable are almost always lying straight down the middle.
What is a structural ridgeline for?
Fixing the sag at a repeatable amount regardless of how far apart the trees are. With one, the hammock hangs the same every time and you can set up quickly in the dark. It also gives somewhere to hang a light and small items.
Why am I cold underneath?
Because your weight compresses the insulation beneath you to nothing, and air moves freely under a hammock. A sleeping bag alone does not work — an underquilt hung outside, or a pad inside, is necessary. Hammocks feel cold at temperatures where the same bag would be fine on the ground.
What about the trees?
Use wide webbing straps rather than rope or cord, which cut into bark and can kill a tree. Many parks require straps of a minimum width for exactly this reason, and some prohibit hammocks altogether. Checking the local rules is worth doing before arriving.
