Boiling the water is optional — it dissolves the sugar faster and slows spoilage slightly, but it does not sterilise the feeder and it is no substitute for changing the nectar. Let it cool fully before filling.

Four parts water, one part plain white sugar. Nothing else.

Plain white sugar only. Ordinary granulated cane or beet sugar. It is the closest available match to the sucrose in flower nectar.

No red dye of any kind. It is unnecessary — the feeder itself is red — and there is no evidence it is safe in the quantities a hummingbird would consume over a season. Commercial dyed nectar exists because it sells, not because birds need it.

No honey, ever. Honey ferments rapidly in a feeder and promotes a fungal infection of the tongue that is fatal to hummingbirds.

No brown, raw or organic sugar. These retain molasses, which contains iron. Hummingbirds cannot process iron in those quantities and it accumulates fatally.

No artificial sweeteners. The whole point is calories. A sweetener with none is a bird starving at a full feeder.

Why 4:1

It is roughly the sucrose concentration of the flowers hummingbirds actually feed from — about twenty percent sugar by weight. Stronger is not better: a thicker syrup is harder for the bird to drink, ferments faster in the feeder, and offers nothing that a bird eating from real flowers all day needs.

Weaker is occasionally suggested for very hot weather on the grounds that birds need the fluid more than the calories. There is little evidence either way, and 4:1 is what every major conservation body recommends year-round — so there is no good reason to improvise.

Keeping the feeder from doing harm

  • Black mould is the thing to watch for. Scrub the ports and the reservoir with a bottle brush every time you refill — hot water is usually enough, and a weak vinegar solution for anything stubborn. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Fill it less, not more. A feeder that holds a week of nectar and gets emptied in three days is a feeder full of ferment. Put in what will be drunk before the next change.
  • Shade slows everything down. The same nectar lasts roughly twice as long out of direct sun, and the feeder is easier to keep clean.
  • Cloudy nectar means throw it out. Not top it up — empty, wash, refill. Cloudiness is bacterial growth and it is already well advanced by the time you can see it.
  • Leaving it up late does not delay migration. That is a persistent myth; migration is triggered by day length. A feeder left out in autumn helps late or injured birds rather than trapping healthy ones.

Should I add red dye?

How often must I change it?

Far more often than most people do, and by temperature rather than appearance. In hot weather every day or two; in mild weather every three to four days. Nectar spoils and grows mould before it looks wrong, so waiting for cloudiness is waiting too long.

Do I need to boil the water?

Not for the sugar to dissolve, and boiling does not meaningfully extend how long the nectar lasts once it is exposed to air and birds. If you do boil it, let it cool completely — hot nectar can injure a bird.

How should the feeder be cleaned?

Thoroughly, with hot water and a brush that reaches the ports, at every change. Avoid soap residue, and never use bleach unless rinsed exhaustively. A neglected feeder is worse than no feeder, because it concentrates birds around a source of mould.
