Lorem ipsum sets a fifth longer than English
Lorem ipsum exists so you can look at a page without reading it, and it does that job well. What it does not do is behave like the English that will replace it — and the gap is big enough to change how a column sets. Comparing the standard passage against 339,742 words of ordinary English prose:
| Lorem ipsum | English | |
|---|---|---|
| Mean word length | 5.55 letters | 4.55 letters |
| Words of 1–3 letters | 24.4% | 39.5% |
| Words of 4–6 letters | 42.4% | 40.3% |
| Words of 7 or more | 33.1% | 20.2% |
English is full of short words — nearly two in five are three letters or fewer. Lorem ipsum has barely half as many, and two-thirds more long ones. Set in the same measure, the Latin gives you fewer words per line, different break points, wider gaps in justified text and more hyphenation. A column that looks comfortable full of lorem can look loose or ragged the moment real copy arrives.
And it is missing letters entirely
The letter distributions sit further apart than people expect — about 19% of all letters would have to change to turn one into the other:
| Letter | In lorem ipsum | In English |
|---|---|---|
u | 8.60% | 2.89% |
h | 0.21% | 5.09% |
i | 10.90% | 6.98% |
m | 5.56% | 2.29% |
q | 2.73% | 0.17% |
e | 10.06% | 12.33% |
w | none at all | 2.02% |
y | none at all | 1.94% |
There is no w and no y anywhere in the passage, and almost no h. If you are choosing a typeface, those are precisely the letters worth looking at — w and y are where a face shows its character, and h carries the ascender that sets the texture of a page. Judging type on lorem ipsum means judging it on an alphabet with the interesting parts removed.
None of which makes lorem ipsum useless. It makes it a tool for one job — ignoring the words — that gets quietly used for a second job it is bad at. If you are testing a layout rather than a mood, paste in a few paragraphs of the real thing, or anything English, and see what actually happens.
How to use
- Choose paragraphs, sentences or words.
- Set the amount you need.
- Copy the text into your mockup.
- Replace it with real content before anything ships.
Frequently asked questions
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
From Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC — a passage about pain and pleasure, scrambled and corrupted through centuries of typesetting use. The opening words are a fragment of dolorem ipsum, which is why the text begins mid-word.
Why use Latin rather than English?
Because it looks like text without being readable, so viewers assess the layout rather than reading the words. English placeholder text pulls attention into the content, which is exactly what a layout review is trying to avoid.
Why do many designers now avoid it?
Because it hides real problems. Lorem ipsum has an even, forgiving texture that real content does not — no long words, no awkward names, no headline that runs to three lines. Designs that look excellent filled with Latin frequently break on the first real paragraph.
What should I use instead?
Real content wherever it exists, even in draft form. Failing that, realistic placeholder text of the correct kind and length — actual product names, plausible headline lengths, genuinely long addresses. The goal is to stress the design, not to flatter it.
Has lorem ipsum ever shipped by accident?
Regularly, and sometimes very visibly — on printed packaging, public websites and at least one broadcast graphic. It is one of the more common last-minute embarrassments in publishing, which is an argument for placeholder text that looks obviously wrong.
Are there alternatives with the same purpose?
Plenty, ranging from other languages to deliberately absurd generators. The joke versions have a genuine advantage: nobody can mistake them for finished copy, so they cannot ship unnoticed.
