This ball is not quite the toy

The Magic 8-Ball has carried the same twenty answers since 1950, in a deliberate split: ten affirmative, five non-committal, five negative. Counting the twenty this page ships gives 9 / 5 / 6. One canonical answer is missing — It is decidedly so — and a plain No stands in its place. Both changes push the same way:

The toy is exactly twice as likely to agree with you as to refuse. This one is one and a half times. That is a small difference to any single question and a large one to the character of the object — the 8-Ball was built as an encouragement machine, and a sixth negative takes a third of that encouragement away.

A quarter of the answers are not answers

Five of the twenty tell you to ask again, which makes the thing a loop rather than an oracle. Shaking until something definite comes out takes 1.33 shakes on average, and runs of nothing happen about as often as you would guess:

Those five are identical in both balls, which makes them a useful control: they cancel out of the yes-to-no ratio entirely. Conditional on eventually getting something definite, this ball says yes 60.0% of the time against the toy's 66.7% — so the whole of the difference is that one swapped answer, and nothing else.

Five shakes produces a yes 95% of the time, and by then the gap between the two balls has closed to under two points. Anyone willing to ask three times is not really consulting a distribution — they are running a search, and the search almost always succeeds. That is the actual mechanism of the toy, and no arrangement of twenty answers changes it.

Frequently asked questions

How many answers are there?

Twenty, on an icosahedral die floating in dark liquid inside the real toy. Ten are affirmative, five are non-committal and five are negative — so the ball is noticeably more encouraging than a coin flip, which is very likely deliberate.

Where did it come from?

From a fortune-telling device made in the 1940s by Albert Carter, whose mother was a professional clairvoyant. It was reworked into a novelty and given its familiar shape by Mattel in the 1950s, and the answer set has barely changed since.

Why does the answer look blurry at first?

Because the die floats in a dyed alcohol solution and takes a moment to settle against the window. The murk is part of the theatre, and it is also why an old ball develops bubbles — the liquid slowly escapes.

Is there any skill to asking?

Only in how you frame the question, and that is genuinely the interesting part. A vague question gets an answer you can read any way you like, which is where the appeal lies. The non-committal answers exist precisely so the ball is never quite wrong.

Should I make decisions with it?

Obviously not, and equally obviously people do. The useful version is the coin-flip insight: noticing whether you are pleased or disappointed by the answer tells you what you actually wanted, which is more informative than the answer.

Is this random?

Yes — the answer is selected using the browser's random source rather than cycling through a list, so repeated questions genuinely can give the same answer. That is a fair reproduction of the physical toy, where the die can settle the same way twice.
