Why this gets hard so fast
- The sequence is one longer each round and always starts from the beginning, so round twelve means recalling twelve in order — not one new one.
- Playback speeds up as you go. Past round fifteen the gaps are short enough that reading the pads stops working and you have to be listening to the tones instead.
- Most people find their limit somewhere between seven and nine, which is roughly the number of items short-term memory holds without a trick.
- The reliable trick is chunking: remember 3-1-4-1-5 as two groups rather than five separate things. Grouping by sound works better than grouping by colour.
- Strict mode ends the run on any mistake. Forgiving mode replays the same sequence so you can keep working at a length you nearly had.

Yes, though what improves is largely strategy rather than raw capacity. People get better at chunking and at using the audio, which raises the score substantially without changing any underlying memory limit. That distinction is well established in memory research.
Do brain training games make you smarter?
The evidence says they make you better at the game. Large studies have repeatedly found that improvements transfer poorly to unrelated tasks, so treating this as cognitive training would be overclaiming. It is a good game, which is a sufficient reason to play it.
