Twelve outcomes rather than nine, and a 14.2-to-one spread between the commonest and the rarest. Which looks like a lopsided system and is the opposite: underneath, it is as even as it could possibly be.

One row is worth a second look. The master number 11 — the rare, special one — is commoner than the ordinary 2, 2,344 against 1,714.

The reduction stops early on 11, 22 and 33 instead of reducing them to 2, 4 and 6. So a master number does not add a category — it takes from one, and only one.

All nine families land within 3 dates of each other across 36,525 — even to within a hundredth of a per cent. The unevenness in the first table is entirely the carving.

Because the reduction is just remainder by nine

Adding a number's digits and repeating until one digit is left is the digital root, and the digital root of a number is that number's remainder on division by nine, with nine standing in for zero. Checked against every number from 1 to 2,000: not one disagrees.

That is why the nine families come out even. A reduced date is a remainder, and remainders by nine spread evenly across a long enough run of dates. The whole system is a hash function with nine buckets and three of the buckets relabelled.

Neither a month nor a day can ever be 33 on its own, so 33 has to arrive as a sum of three parts that happens to land there. That is the whole reason it is the rarest outcome, and it has nothing to do with 33 being significant.

None of which says anything about anyone. It is arithmetic, it is exact, and it is worth showing precisely because the arithmetic is the only part of a numerology reading that can be checked at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is there evidence numerology works?

No. There is no scientific support for numbers derived from a name or birth date predicting anything about personality or events, and the studies that have looked have found nothing. This page presents the traditional system as tradition — it is offered as entertainment, not as insight.

Then why do the readings feel accurate?

Largely the Barnum effect: general statements that could describe almost anyone are consistently rated as personally accurate. The descriptions used in numerology, astrology and similar systems are broad and mostly flattering, which is precisely the combination people recognise themselves in.

How is a life path number calculated?

By reducing the digits of the birth date to a single digit, repeatedly summing until one remains — with 11, 22 and sometimes 33 conventionally left unreduced as master numbers. Different practitioners reduce in different orders, which can give different answers from the same date.

What is the Pythagorean method?

The assignment of numbers 1 through 9 to the letters of the alphabet in order, used to convert a name to numbers. The attribution to Pythagoras is traditional rather than historical — the modern system dates from the early twentieth century.

Why does my number change with a different name?

Because the calculation is on the letters, so a married name, a nickname or a changed spelling produces different figures. Practitioners disagree about which name should be used, which is itself informative about the system's precision.

Is there any harm in it?

As a pastime, no. It becomes a problem when it substitutes for medical, financial or legal advice, or when someone makes a consequential decision because a number said so. Enjoying the tradition and not acting on it is the sensible position.
