The rules

    How the deck works

    • A round is a shuffled deck, not a random pick. Picking at random hands out the same prompt twice in ten cards, which reads as broken even though each draw was perfectly fair. Every card comes up once before any comes up again.
    • When the deck runs out it reshuffles, and it will not open the new deck with the card that closed the old one.
    • Difficulty is about how hard the thing is to convey, not how obscure the word is. Sneezing is an easy charade and a hard drawing.
    • Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. Scores live in the open page only.

    How to use

    1. Pick a game, a round length and a difficulty.
    2. Deal a card, start the timer, and pass the phone to the next player.
    3. Add teams to keep score as you go.

    Frequently asked questions

Will the same prompt come up twice?

Not until the whole deck has been through. A round is a shuffled deck dealt from the top rather than a random pick each time — picking at random gives you a repeat within about ten cards, which reads as broken even though every draw was fair. When the deck does run out it reshuffles, and it will not open the new deck with the card that closed the old one.

    What does difficulty mean here?

How hard the thing is to convey, not how obscure the word is. Sneezing is an easy charade and a hard drawing, so the same idea sits at different levels in different games. Each deck has its own prompts for that reason.

    How does taboo work?

You describe the word without saying it or any of the five banned words. Parts of a banned word count, and so do rhymes, initials and spelling it out. Someone on the other team should watch the card and call any slip — that is the whole game.

Why not one big word list for all three?

Because the three games want different things. Charades needs something you can do, pictionary needs something with a shape, and taboo needs a word with obvious neighbours. A shared list serves none of them well, so no prompt appears in more than one deck.

Do I need to pass a phone round?

For charades and pictionary the actor or artist reads the card, so yes. For taboo the describer holds it and the other team watches over their shoulder.

    Are scores saved?

No. Everything lives in the open page — nothing is stored and nothing is uploaded. Closing the tab ends the game.
