Heat moves into soil as a damped wave, and the damping depth is √(2κ/ω) — so it depends on the period of what's travelling. For the annual cycle that's over seven feet; for the daily cycle it's 4.6 inches. At two inches down, 98% of the seasonal signal survives — which is what makes it a good place to measure — but 65% of the daily swing survives too. On a day with 20°F between the high and the low, the soil at two inches still swings 13°F, so a mid-afternoon reading sits about 6.5°F above that day's mean. The 55°F crabgrass threshold is a statement about the mean, so reading 55 at 3pm and acting on it puts you roughly three weeks early.
Depth would filter that out — at eight inches only 18% of the daily swing is left, while 91% of the season still gets through. But the seed germinates at one to two inches, so you have to measure where the noise is. The fix is to read at the same hour each morning and average three to five days, not to dig deeper.
Too early is a real failure mode, not a safe one. The barrier degrades, and crabgrass germinates over about ten weeks rather than all at once. A six-week product applied exactly on time covers six of those ten; applied four weeks early it covers two. Earlier never covers more — it just moves the same window of protection off the front of the germination period and leaves the back end open. That's the case for split applications, and it's why "get it down early to be safe" is the commonest way to lose the season.
- Poa annua runs the other way. It germinates as the soil cools through about 70°F in late summer, so it's timed in August or September. A spring pre-emergent does nothing about it, and anyone treating it in spring is a season out.
- Goosegrass is later than crabgrass — about 63°F against 55 — which is why a single early pass aimed at crabgrass so often misses it entirely.
- A pre-emergent and new seed don't mix. The barrier stops a grass seedling by exactly the same mechanism it stops a crabgrass one; that's not a side effect. A few products are labelled for use with new seed and they're the exception.
- Water it in or it does nothing. Until about half an inch of water moves it into the top inch of soil there's no barrier, just granules on the leaf. A dry week after application is a common reason correct timing still fails.
- Aerate first, apply second. The barrier is a thin layer in the top inch, and raking, aerating or digging after application opens holes in exactly those lines.
- Forsythia in bloom is a warning, not a starting gun — full bloom runs roughly two to three weeks ahead of crabgrass germination.

If the barrier runs eight weeks and germination runs ten, a single application always leaves a gap at the end however well it is timed. A second application timed to start where the first runs out closes it, and that is standard professional practice rather than an upsell.
When should I apply pre-emergent for Poa annua?
Late summer, not spring. Annual bluegrass runs the other way from everything else on this list: it germinates as the soil COOLS through about 70 degrees, so its timing is August or September depending on where you are. A spring pre-emergent does nothing about it at all, and anyone treating Poa annua in spring is a full season out.
Does one pre-emergent application handle goosegrass too?
Often not. Goosegrass germinates at around 63 degrees against crabgrass at 55, which in a normal spring is two to four weeks later. An application timed for crabgrass and running out on schedule can be gone before goosegrass starts. If goosegrass is the real problem, the timing you want is later than everything written about crabgrass.
Can I apply pre-emergent and grass seed at the same time?
Not with most products. A pre-emergent barrier stops a grass seedling by exactly the same mechanism it stops a crabgrass seedling — it does not distinguish between them, and that is not a side effect but the mode of action. A small number of products are specifically labelled for use with new seed. Everything else forces a choice between overseeding and crabgrass control for that season.
Do I need to water in pre-emergent?
Yes, and until you do there is no barrier at all — just granules sitting on the leaf. Roughly half an inch of water moves the active ingredient into the top inch of soil, and most labels want that within a few days of application. Rain counts.
