Halving the spacing exactly doubles the work
A cross-hatch at spacing s needs about one line every s inches in each direction, so the total stitching is
2 × width × height ÷ spacing
— inversely proportional to the spacing, with no other term in it. Which makes "a bit closer together" a much bigger decision than it sounds.

Four inches to half an inch is not twice the work, or three times. It is eight times — a thousand yards of stitching against a hundred and twenty five. It is the single decision that most changes how long a quilt takes to finish.
The angle makes no difference at all
Diagonal quilting looks like more work, because each line crossing the quilt corner to corner is obviously longer than one crossing straight across. And it is longer — but there are proportionally fewer of them, and the two effects cancel exactly.
Laying parallel lines across a 90 by 100 rectangle at 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 degrees and adding up what falls inside gives 9,000 inches at every angle for a one-inch spacing. Total line length is area ÷ spacing and the angle simply does not appear. So choose the angle for how it looks and what it does to the bias — it costs the same either way.
The batting has an opinion, and you find out late
Every batting carries a maximum quilting distance. Go beyond it and the fibres migrate — the batting bunches, thins in patches and beards through the fabric. The reason it matters more than most rules is when you find out: it happens in the wash, after the quilt is finished, bound and given away.

These are typical ranges, not a specification. Manufacturers differ, and a scrim-bonded batting goes much further than a needled one of the same fibre — which is why cotton appears twice above with very different numbers. The real figure is printed on the package you actually bought. Check that one.
Notes
- Thread is used twice. The bobbin consumes roughly the same length as the top thread, so the total is double the line length. Bobbin changes are the interruption that makes dense quilting feel slower than the arithmetic suggests.
- This is line length, not time. Actual quilting time includes advancing the quilt, repositioning, thread changes and unpicking, none of which scale with the stitching. Use the ratios rather than trying to convert to hours.
- Denser quilting shrinks the quilt. Every line takes up a little fabric, so a densely quilted top finishes smaller than it measured flat. Worth allowing for if the finished size has to hit a target.
- Free-motion and stipple are not on this scale. A meander has no fixed spacing; judge it by the gap you are leaving and use the closest straight-line figure as a rough guide to the effort.

Frequently asked questions
How much thread does quilting a quilt take?
Total line length is two times width times height divided by the spacing, for a cross-hatch — and the bobbin uses roughly the same length again. A 90 by 100 inch quilt cross-hatched at two inches takes about 250 yards of top thread and 250 of bobbin.
How much more work is closer quilting?
Exactly proportional. Halving the spacing doubles the stitching, with no other term in the formula. Going from a four-inch cross-hatch to half an inch on a queen quilt is 125 yards against 1,000 — eight times the work, from a decision that sounds like a detail.
Is diagonal quilting more work than straight?
No — identically the same, which surprises people. Each diagonal line is longer, but there are proportionally fewer of them, and the two effects cancel exactly. Laying lines across a 90 by 100 rectangle at every angle from 15 to 75 degrees gives 9,000 inches every time at one-inch spacing. Only the spacing matters, so choose the angle for how it looks.
How far apart can I quilt?
Whatever your batting says on its packaging, which is the figure that matters. As a rough guide, needled cotton wants about 3 inches, wool about 4, an 80/20 blend or scrim-bonded cotton around 8, and polyester up to 10 — but manufacturers differ and scrim changes it dramatically.
What happens if I quilt too far apart?

Does the batting fibre really change the maximum that much?
Yes, and so does the construction. Scrim-bonded cotton tolerates well over twice the spacing of plain needled cotton of the same fibre, because a light stabiliser holds the fibres in place. That is why the number belongs to the specific product rather than the fibre.
Why does dense quilting take so much longer than the numbers suggest?
Because line length is not time. Advancing the quilt, repositioning, changing thread and unpicking do not scale with the stitching, and bobbin changes multiply with density. Use the ratios to compare options rather than trying to convert them into hours.
Does quilting make the quilt smaller?
Slightly, and more so the denser it is — every line takes up a little fabric. If the finished size has to hit a target, quilt a test sandwich at your chosen density and measure the take-up before committing.
