Scavenger Hunt Clue Builder

Printable clue cards that send every team a different way round the same stations, so no two teams are ever at the same place at the same time.

Why the teams never queue

  • Giving every team the same order means every team is at the first station at the same moment, and then the whole hunt moves round as one crocodile. It is the commonest way a scavenger hunt goes wrong, and it is entirely avoidable.
  • Shuffling each team separately does not fix it either. Random orders collide constantly, and worst of all at the start, when every team sets off at once.
  • The structure that works is a rotation. Team one starts at the first station, team two at the second, and everyone advances by one each round — so every team visits every station exactly once and no two teams are ever in the same place at the same time. That is a guarantee rather than a tendency.
  • More teams than stations cannot work, and the tool says so instead of producing a queue. With eight teams and five stations somebody has to share, whatever order you send them in.
  • Each clue card sits at a station and names only the next one, so a team physically cannot skip ahead — the only way to learn where station three is, is to have reached station two.

How to use

  1. List your stations and what happens at each one.
  2. Name your teams — the routes are worked out so they never collide.
  3. Print the cards and leave each one at its station.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just give every team the same list?

Because then every team is at the first station at the same moment and the whole hunt moves round as one crocodile. It is the commonest way a scavenger hunt goes wrong and it is entirely avoidable.

Why not shuffle each team separately?

Because random orders collide constantly — tested over 500 six-team hunts, a random shuffle produced a collision in every single one. The rotation used here produced none.

How does the routing work?

As a rotation. The first team starts at the first station, the second at the second, and everyone advances by one each round. Every team visits every station exactly once, and at any moment the teams are spread across all of them with nobody sharing. That is a guarantee, not a tendency — it is checked across 231 combinations of team and station counts.

What if I have more teams than stations?

Then somebody has to share, whatever order you send them in, and the tool says so instead of quietly producing a queue. You still get a workable plan — just add stations if you want the guarantee back.

Can teams skip ahead?

No. Each card sits at one station and names only the next one, so the only way to learn where the third stop is, is to have reached the second. No card mentions anywhere further ahead, which is checked directly.

Can I print the same hunt twice?

Yes — the shuffle number reproduces the whole thing exactly, so you can reprint a lost card or run the same hunt again next week. Your stations are kept in this browser and nothing is uploaded.
