The "two inches" toe rule is one sock
Every sock pattern says some version of it: work the foot until it is about two inches short of the full length, then start the toe. But the toe is not a length you choose — it is the length the decreases take. Coming down 4 stitches every other round from N to the 16 you graft needs (N−16)/4 decrease rounds spread over twice that many rounds, so
toe length = (N − 16) / (2 × rounds per inch)
Put in the commonest sock there is — 64 stitches at 12 rounds to the inch — and it comes out at exactly 2.00 inches. That is where the rule comes from. It is not a fact about toes. It is one sock that got written down and repeated.

A 1.77-inch spread across perfectly ordinary socks. Follow the rule on a big foot in thicker yarn and you stop two inches from the end with 3.2 inches of toe still to work — so the sock finishes well past the toes. Which is precisely the complaint people have about handknit socks in larger sizes, and it was in the arithmetic all along.
Circumference sets the stitch count. Shoe size sets nothing.
Shoe size is a length. The stitch count is a circumference. Between two people those are only loosely related, and the arithmetic makes the consequence concrete: at 8 stitches to the inch with 10% negative ease, half an inch of foot circumference is 3.6 stitches.
So two people who buy the same shoes can need socks four stitches apart, and no amount of sizing by shoe number will ever see it. Measure round the ball of the foot with the tape snug. It takes ten seconds and it is the only measurement that decides the cast-on.
Why sock counts are always multiples of four
Not a convention — three separate constraints that happen to land on the same numbers. The heel takes half the stitches. The heel turn needs that half to be even. The toe comes off four a round. Sweep every count and the survivors are the multiples of four exactly: nothing else satisfies all three, and every multiple of four does.

Notes on the fit
- Negative ease is what keeps a sock up. A sock knitted to the size of a foot bags at the ankle and slides down inside the shoe. Ten per cent is the usual figure; the tool shows how many stitches' worth of stretch you are asking the fabric for.
- The heel turn is the one figure that genuinely varies. Different heel recipes leave different stitch counts, so it is shown as its own line rather than buried. If your pattern's turn leaves a different number, the gusset simply picks up the difference.
- Half of all socks need one lopsided gusset round. The number of stitches to lose comes out odd about half the time, which means one round can only decrease on one side. That is normal and invisible in the finished sock — but a plan that divides by two and rounds would quietly be a stitch out.
- Measure gauge in the round, on the actual sock. Most people work a different tension on double-points or a small circumference than they do flat, and at 8 stitches to the inch a quarter-stitch error is most of an inch round the foot.

- Add the foot length, leg length and your gauge in the round.
- Read the cast-on, which is rounded to a workable multiple of four.

When should I start the toe decreases?
When the remaining length equals the toe length, and that is not two inches — it is (stitches − 16) / (2 × rounds per inch). Coming off 4 stitches every other round takes as long as it takes, and the familiar "two inches" is what that formula gives for a 64-stitch sock at 12 rounds to the inch. Exactly that sock and no other.
Why is my handknit sock too long at the toe?
Almost certainly because you used the two-inch rule on a sock it does not fit. An 80-stitch sock at 10 rounds to the inch has a 3.2-inch toe, so stopping two inches short leaves 1.2 inches of sock hanging past your toes. Bigger feet and thicker yarn both push it the same way, which is why the problem shows up most in men's socks.
How much negative ease should a sock have?
About 10% of the foot circumference, which is what stops it bagging at the ankle and sliding down inside the shoe. On a 9-inch foot that is nearly a full inch the fabric has to give — worth knowing, because it also means a non-stretchy stitch pattern needs less ease than plain stocking stitch.
