How many quickdraws a route needs, and whether your rope is genuinely long enough to lower from the anchor — the check people skip.

Bolt spacing varies enormously between crags and eras, so this is an estimate from the length. Where a guidebook gives a bolt count, trust that instead — and carry a couple spare either way, because finding yourself one draw short at the anchor is a genuinely awkward place to be.

Lowering off the end of the rope

This is one of the most common ways experienced sport climbers get seriously hurt, and the arithmetic behind it is trivial: lowering uses twice the route length, because the rope runs up to the anchor and back down. A 60 metre rope will not lower a climber from a 35 metre route, and the belayer finds out at the moment nothing can be done.

Tie a knot in the end of the rope. Every time. It costs three seconds and it converts this specific mistake from a fatality into a scare. It is the single highest-value habit in sport climbing and it is routinely skipped because the rope is "obviously long enough".

Guidebook lengths are approximate and often optimistic, ropes shrink over their life, and a belayer standing well back from the wall adds several metres to the path. Treat any route within a few metres of your rope's limit as one that needs to be rappelled rather than lowered.

Frequently asked questions

Is my rope long enough to lower off?

Only if it is more than twice the route length, and this catches people out regularly. A 30-metre route needs more than 60 metres of rope to lower from the anchor, and routes have grown longer while many climbers still carry 60-metre ropes bought years ago.

Why tie a knot in the end of the rope?

Because it is the single measure that prevents the most common fatal sport climbing accident — the belayer lowering the climber off the end of the rope. It costs nothing, works even when the guidebook length is wrong, and is standard practice for that reason alone.

How many quickdraws should I carry?

One per bolt plus two for the anchor, and a couple spare. Guidebook bolt counts are frequently out of date after rebolting, and finding yourself a draw short partway up a route is both dangerous and avoidable for the weight of one more draw.

Does route length in the guidebook mean pitch length?

Usually, but not always, and the distinction matters when lowering. Some guides quote the height of the anchor above the ground and some the length of climbing, which can differ on a route that traverses. Where it is close, treating the longer interpretation as correct is the safe assumption.

Should I lower or rappel from the anchor?

Local practice varies and both are used. Lowering puts wear on fixed hardware, which is why some areas ask climbers to rappel from established routes, and threading correctly is where accidents happen either way. Whichever is normal at the crag, doing it the same way every time reduces error.

Is this a substitute for a guidebook?

No, and not for instruction either. Bolt counts, anchor configurations and descent details are area-specific and change, and a current guidebook or a reliable local source is the authority. Nothing here is climbing instruction.
