A hundred yards is not a hundred metres
A yard is exactly 0.9144 metres, so a 100-yard swim is 91.44 m — 8.56% short. Held at the same speed, a sixty-second 100 yards is 65.62 seconds over 100 metres. That is 5.6 seconds which have nothing to do with how anyone swam, and rather more than most races are won by.

The long events are mismatched on purpose — a 500 yards stands in for a 400 metres, a 1650 for a 1500 — and the mismatch is real distance rather than a naming quirk. The "mile" is the worst of it: 1650 yards is 1508.8 m, a 1500 is 1500, and an actual mile is 1609.3. Three different swims, one word.
And the conversion is a floor, because it cannot see the walls
Turning is faster than swimming, and a short course has far more turns. Over 1500 m a 25 yards pool has 65 turns against 29 in a 50 m pool — 36 more pushes off the wall. A real short-course time therefore beats the pure conversion, by an amount no arithmetic here can predict.
