These are the same size and will start turning. They are also exactly what strips threads — a fastener that feels right for a turn or two and then destroys both parts.
Three things that make this hard
Pipe thread sizes are not a measurement of anything. A "½ inch" NPT thread measures 0.840 inches across the outside — two thirds larger than its name. The number refers to the approximate bore of a long-obsolete iron pipe, not to any dimension you can put calipers on. So measuring a pipe fitting and searching for a matching nominal size finds nothing, and people reasonably conclude their calipers are broken. Every pipe size here carries its real outside diameter for that reason.
NPT and BSP will start, then jam. Both are pipe threads, both use the same nominal sizes, and at ½ inch both run 14 threads per inch — but NPT is 0.840 across and BSP is 0.825, and the thread form is 60° against Whitworth's 55°. They engage far enough to feel right and then bind, or seal badly and weep. Two turns of resistance is not the same as a fit.
M8 and 5/16″ differ by six hundredths of a millimetre. No caliper in a normal workshop tells them apart on diameter. Only the pitch does — 1.25 mm against 1.41. Which is why the single most useful habit here is to measure pitch across ten threads and divide by ten: that divides your measurement error by ten as well. Reading one crest-to-crest on a 1 mm pitch means resolving hundredths of a millimetre; reading ten means resolving tenths.
- Threads measure under nominal, and that's normal. They're cut below size so they assemble, and wear, dirt and plating take a little more. A reading over nominal is the suspicious one — usually a burr, a damaged crest, or calipers sitting on a thread rather than across two.
- A pitch gauge beats another caliper reading. Where two candidates have close pitches, comb-style gauges settle it in seconds by matching the profile rather than measuring it.
- Look at the form, not just the numbers. Whitworth threads have rounded crests and roots where unified and metric are flatter, and a tapered thread visibly narrows toward its end.
- If it's going into something expensive, match it against a known good part. That beats any measurement, and costs nothing.

How do I tell an M8 bolt from a 5/16 inch one?
By the pitch, because the diameters differ by about six hundredths of a millimetre and no caliper in a normal workshop resolves that. M8 coarse is 1.25 mm pitch; 5/16 UNC is eighteen threads per inch, which is 1.41 mm. That is a clear difference where the diameter is not. The same pattern repeats up the range, which is why a diameter reading alone almost never settles an identification.
What is the best way to measure thread pitch?
Span ten threads with calipers and divide by ten, because that divides your measurement error by ten as well. Reading a single crest-to-crest distance on a one millimetre pitch means resolving hundredths of a millimetre, which is beyond most calipers used carefully. Reading across ten means resolving tenths, which is easy. A comb-style pitch gauge is better still where two candidates are close, since it matches the profile rather than measuring it.
Why does my bolt measure smaller than its stated size?
Because threads are cut under nominal so that they actually assemble, and wear, dirt and plating all take a little more off. A measurement a tenth or two under nominal is completely normal and is what you should expect. Reading OVER nominal is the suspicious direction — that usually means a burr, a damaged crest, or calipers sitting on top of a thread rather than spanning two of them.
What happens if I force a slightly wrong thread?
You destroy both parts, and usually the more expensive one. The dangerous case is the right diameter with the wrong pitch, because the fastener starts cleanly and feels correct for a turn or two before it binds. By then it has already cut a false thread into the female part. A wrong pitch never becomes right by being forced, and backing out early costs nothing while continuing costs a helicoil at best.
Can I tell thread systems apart by looking?
Partly, and it is worth doing alongside the measurements. Whitworth threads including BSP have rounded crests and roots where unified and metric threads are noticeably flatter. A tapered pipe thread visibly narrows toward its end, where a parallel one does not. Neither observation is conclusive on its own but both are useful checks against a measurement you are unsure of.
What if nothing matches my measurements?
Doubt the pitch first, since it is the figure most often taken wrong and the one the identification depends on most heavily. After that, consider that the thread may be damaged, worn or plated, or that it belongs to a system outside the common ones here — there are British Association, Acme, trapezoidal and various proprietary threads still in circulation. And if it is a pipe fitting, remember the nominal size names nothing measurable.
