Four common rules, up to three times apart
There is no single accepted formula for this, and the popular ones do not agree. Daily target in fluid ounces before any exercise, by the rule you happen to have read:

At 100 lb the four sit within a third of each other. At 300 lb the widest is 3.1 times the narrowest. They pull apart because three of them scale with body weight and one does not — and the one that does not is the one everybody has heard of.
A fixed target is right for exactly one person
"Eight eight-ounce glasses" is 64 ounces for everybody, so it crosses each scaling rule at a single body weight and is wrong on both sides of it:

Below those weights it asks for too much and above them too little, and by 300 lb it is calling for under a third of what the highest rule wants. A number with no input cannot be personalised, which is the whole objection to it in one line. That is not an argument for any particular replacement — the three that do scale still disagree with each other by a third — but it is a reason to treat any single figure here as a starting point rather than a measurement.
And the exercise box matters less than it looks
This page adds 12 ounces per 30 minutes of exercise, which works out at 0.4 ounces a minute, against 0.667 ounces per pound of body weight:

One pound is worth 1.67 minutes of exercise, so the 70 lb between a small adult and a large one is worth about 117 minutes — nearly two hours of daily exercise. For a 200 lb person, half an hour in the gym moves the answer by 8.3%. The exercise box feels like the interesting input, and the weight box is doing almost all of the work.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the eight glasses a day rule come from?
Not from evidence. It is usually traced to a 1945 recommendation that stated a quantity of water for adults and then noted, in the very next sentence, that most of it is already present in prepared food — a qualification that dropped away as the figure was repeated. There is no good trial supporting a fixed universal target.
How much water do I actually need?
It varies with body size, activity, climate, diet and health, which is why a single number misleads. Total intake includes water in food, which contributes roughly a fifth for most people, and every other drink counts. The practical answer for most healthy adults is to drink when thirsty.
Does coffee or tea count?
Yes. The idea that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you does not survive contact with the evidence — the diuretic effect at ordinary intakes is small and outweighed by the fluid in the drink. They contribute to hydration much like water does.
How can I tell if I am drinking enough?
Urine colour is the simplest practical indicator: pale straw suggests adequate hydration, and dark yellow suggests drinking more. Thirst is a reliable signal for most healthy adults, with the notable exception of older people, in whom the thirst response weakens.
Can I drink too much water?
Yes, and it is genuinely dangerous. Drinking far more than the kidneys can excrete dilutes blood sodium, causing hyponatremia — which has caused deaths at endurance events and in water-drinking contests. It is rare, but it is a real reason not to force down large volumes to hit a target.
Do I need more when exercising?
Yes, in proportion to how much you sweat, which varies enormously between people and conditions. For prolonged or very sweaty exercise, replacing electrolytes matters as well as fluid. Anyone with a kidney or heart condition should follow their clinician's guidance rather than a general calculator, and nothing here is medical advice.
