How accurate are forecasts?
Very good at short range and degrading steadily. A one-day forecast is right the large majority of the time, a five-day forecast is useful but noticeably less reliable, and beyond about a week it is closer to climatology than prediction. Forecast skill has improved substantially over recent decades.
What does a 40 per cent chance of rain mean?
Usually that there is a 40 per cent probability of measurable rain at any given point in the forecast area. It does not mean it will rain on 40 per cent of the area, nor for 40 per cent of the time — a genuinely common misreading that changes what you would do about it.
Why do two apps disagree?
Because they use different models, different post-processing and different source data. Forecasting involves running several models and interpreting them, so honest disagreement is normal — and a forecast presented with no uncertainty is hiding something rather than knowing more.
What is feels-like temperature?
A combination of temperature with wind chill in cold conditions or humidity in hot ones, expressing how the air affects a human body rather than a thermometer. The two indices are calculated quite differently and are not on the same scale, which is why the feels-like figure jumps around near the crossover.
Why is the forecast wrong for my exact spot?
Because models work on a grid, and local terrain, water bodies and urban surfaces all produce conditions the grid cell cannot resolve. Coastal, mountain and valley locations diverge most, which is why local knowledge routinely beats a general forecast there.
Should I rely on this for anything serious?
No. For aviation, marine passages, severe weather or anything where being wrong matters, use your national weather service and its warnings, which carry official responsibility. This is a convenience view of general forecast data.
