A linear toe measurement is taken across the wheel at hub height, so it converts through the rim diameter rather than the tyre's. An inch of toe and a degree of toe are not the same spec

Toe is an angle, but it gets measured as a distance across the rim — so converting between the two runs through the wheel diameter. An eighth of an inch is 0.4775° on a 15-inch wheel and 0.3769° on a 19-inch one: the same measurement, the same car, and a difference of nearly 27% in what the wheels are actually doing.

Note the middle column: a tenth of a degree is 0.62 mm on a 14" wheel and 0.89 mm on a 20" — under a millimetre either way. That is why toe is quoted in minutes of arc and why it is not a job for a tape measure.

So a spec carried onto bigger wheels quietly changes

Fit bigger wheels, dial in the same inch figure the workshop used last time, and the car ends up with less toe than it had. Fifteens to nineteens loses 26.7% of the angle, and even a two-inch jump costs over ten. The shift is simply the diameter ratio — and nothing about the measurement announces it, because the tape reads exactly the same both times.

For scale: a common front spec is about 6 minutes of arc, which is 0.75 mm across a 17-inch rim. An eighth of an inch is a long way past that. And camber is more visible than it sounds — a single degree leans the top of a 19-inch rim over 8.4 mm.

How do I convert toe from millimetres to degrees?

Take the arctangent of the measurement over the rim diameter in millimetres. It runs through the wheel size, which is why the two units are not interchangeable between different wheels.

How much difference does the wheel size make?

What if I fit bigger wheels?

Can I set toe with a tape measure?

What is a typical toe specification?

Around a tenth of a degree of toe-in at the front, which is six minutes of arc, or about 0.75 mm across a 17 inch rim. An eighth of an inch is a long way past that.

How much does a degree of camber actually lean?

More than it sounds. One degree tips the top of a 19 inch rim over 8.4 mm — which is why a degree and a half of negative camber is clearly visible standing in front of the car.

Is my spec per wheel or total?

Check, because they differ by a factor of two and are rarely labelled. Some manufacturers quote toe for each wheel and some quote the total across the axle, and setting one to the other doubles or halves it.
