- NEVER do breath-hold training in or near water without a trained buddy watching you continuously and within arm’s reach. This is not a formality — shallow water blackout gives no warning, the person blacking out feels fine right up to the moment they do not, and they drown silently and quickly.
- These tables are for DRY training only — lying down, on a bed or a floor, away from water entirely. Every table on this page assumes that, and none of them is safe to take into a pool on your own.
- Never hyperventilate before a breath-hold. It lowers carbon dioxide without raising oxygen, which removes the urge to breathe while doing nothing about the thing that actually keeps you conscious. It is the single most common factor in freediving fatalities.
- Stop at the first sign of anything neurological — tingling, tunnel vision, confusion, loss of coordination. These are not milestones to push through and they are not part of the training.
- Take a course. Freediving is genuinely dangerous and the safety skills — buddy protocols, rescue, recovery breathing — are the entire content of an entry-level course, and they cannot be learned from a table.

What the two tables actually train
A CO₂ table holds the breath-hold constant and shortens the rest between rounds. Carbon dioxide accumulates faster than you clear it, so each hold starts from a worse position than the last. What you are training is tolerance to the urge to breathe — which is driven by carbon dioxide, not by lack of oxygen.
An O₂ table keeps the rest constant and lengthens the hold. It is the more demanding of the two and should sit on a different day of the week — never the same session, and never both in one day.
The distinction matters for safety. The urge to breathe is a carbon dioxide signal, and it is the thing that normally saves you. Hyperventilating removes that signal without adding any oxygen, which is why it is the single most common factor in freediving deaths — people feel fine, keep going, and lose consciousness with no warning at all.

- Choose a CO2 or O2 table.
- Train lying down, on dry land, never in or near water.
- Stop immediately if you feel light-headed.
Frequently asked questions
Why dry training only?
Because breath-hold blackout in water is frequently fatal and gives almost no warning. Loss of consciousness underwater means inhaling water, and it can happen to fit, experienced people who felt fine seconds earlier. Table training on land carries no such risk, which is why every reputable source restricts it there.
Never train breath-holding alone in water?
Never. This is the one rule with no exceptions. Shallow water blackout kills competent swimmers in lifeguarded pools every year, because an unconscious person underwater looks like someone swimming and attracts no attention. If you train in water at all, it is with a trained buddy watching you directly, one up one down, every time.
Should I hyperventilate first?
No, and this is the single most dangerous misconception in breath-holding. Hyperventilating lowers carbon dioxide without meaningfully raising oxygen, which removes the urge to breathe while doing nothing for your actual oxygen supply. You then black out without ever feeling the warning. It has killed a great many people.
What is the difference between CO2 and O2 tables?
CO2 tables hold the breath-hold constant and shorten the recovery breathing, training tolerance to the discomfort of rising carbon dioxide. O2 tables keep recovery constant and lengthen the holds, training tolerance to falling oxygen. They stress different things and are usually run on different days.
How often should I train?
Considerably less than enthusiasm suggests. Most coaching recommends a small number of sessions a week with full recovery between, because the adaptations are partly neurological and fatigue accumulates. Daily maximal tables are a route to diminishing returns and to taking risks while tired.
Is this a substitute for instruction?
No. Freediving is taught by qualified instructors for good reason, and the safety procedures are the substance of the course rather than an appendix to it. This is a timer for dry tables. Nothing here is training, medical advice, or a reason to attempt anything in water.
