About these water sports tools
Cold water kills faster than cold air and in a different order than people expect, and the sequence has a name worth memorising: one, ten, one. You have about one minute to get your breathing under control, because sudden immersion triggers an involuntary gasp and then hyperventilation — and that gasp, taken underwater, is what drowns most people rather than hypothermia. Then you have roughly ten minutes of meaningful movement before cold shuts down the muscles in your hands and arms, which is the window for self-rescue and it is short. Then you have around an hour before hypothermia causes unconsciousness. The order matters: almost everyone assumes hypothermia is the immediate threat, when in fact it is the last of the three, and the first minute is the one that decides the outcome. A lifejacket helps most during exactly that minute, by keeping your airway clear while you are incapable of helping yourself. The second thing worth knowing is that being able to swim well is nearly irrelevant in cold water once the ten minutes are gone, which is why staying with a capsized boat beats swimming for a shore that looks close. The third is that water is around 800 times denser than air, so drag rises steeply with speed and the power needed to push a hull faster grows far quicker than the speed does — the reason a displacement hull has a speed it simply will not exceed regardless of how much power is applied.
