Direction and contact are different failures — you can hit a perfect draw fat.

Thin / bladed
Ball struck near its equator with the leading edge
Usually rising through impact or the ball too far back. Feel your chest staying down and turning through, not lifting.
Fat / chunked
Club enters the ground before the ball
Weight hanging on the back foot at impact. Drill: finish with 90% of your weight on the lead side, every swing.
Topped
Club strikes the top of the ball
Almost always trying to help the ball into the air. Trust the loft — hit down on it and the club does the lifting.
Shank
Ball strikes the hosel and shoots hard right
The club moves closer to the ball through impact. Drill: place a headcover just outside the ball and miss it. Rarely a grip issue; usually weight moving toward the toes.
Sky / pop-up
Ball climbs almost vertically off the driver crown
Too steep an angle of attack with a teed ball. Tee lower and feel the club sweeping up.

Modern launch-monitor data settled the old argument: the club face controls where the ball starts (roughly 85% of start direction on full shots), and the face angle relative to the swing path controls the curve. This is why aiming further left to cure a slice makes it worse — it steepens the very path that is causing the curve. Fix the face first, then the path.

Frequently asked questions

What determines where the ball starts?

The clubface angle at impact, overwhelmingly — roughly 85 per cent of the start direction with a driver, and more with shorter clubs. This is the opposite of what was taught for decades, and launch monitor data settled it conclusively.

What determines the curve?

The clubface angle relative to the swing path. If the face is open to the path the ball curves right for a right-handed player, and closed to the path curves it left. The curve is about the relationship between the two, not about either one alone.

Why does the old ball flight theory persist?

Because it was taught for generations before launch monitors could measure impact directly. The old model said path determined start direction and face determined curve, which is very nearly backwards. Plenty of instruction still repeats it.

What causes a slice?

A clubface open to the swing path at impact. The usual pattern is an out-to-in path with a face that is open relative to it — which starts the ball left and curves it hard right. Fixing only the path without the face can turn a slice into a pull, which feels like a different problem and is the same one.

Which should I fix first?

The face, generally, because it dominates the start direction and because a square face relative to the path removes the curve regardless of where the path points. A straight shot at the wrong target is a much easier problem than a shot that curves unpredictably.

Is a small draw or fade a problem?

No — a consistent shot shape is an asset, and most good players have one. The problem is a shot that curves differently each time, or one that curves so much it costs distance and control. Trying to eliminate all curvature is usually a worse goal than making it repeatable.
