How Bob's 27 works
Start on 27. Throw three darts at D1, then D2, all the way to D20 and finish on the bull. Every dart that lands adds the double's value; miss all three and you lose that value once. Drop below zero and the run is over. It is a brutal routine precisely because it punishes the big doubles hardest — miss the bull at the end and you drop 50 in one visit. A perfect game is 1437, and simply surviving to the bull is a genuinely good session.
How to use
- Pick a routine and record each session honestly.
- Log doubles attempted as well as doubles hit.
- Read the trend across sessions rather than one result.
- Practise the finishing, not only the scoring.
Frequently asked questions
What should I actually practise?
Doubles, far more than most players do. Scoring practice is more satisfying and finishing is what wins legs, so a routine weighted toward doubles usually produces the faster improvement. Around-the-clock on doubles is the classic drill for a reason.
Why record attempts rather than just hits?
Because a doubles percentage needs both. Remembering that you hit a few doubles tells you nothing; knowing you hit eleven from forty attempts is a number you can compare against next week. Attempts are the part people forget to write down.
What is a realistic doubles percentage?
Club players commonly sit somewhere in the twenties to thirties per cent on their preferred doubles, and professionals average considerably higher across a match. What matters more than the absolute figure is whether yours is rising.
Does practising with a scoreboard help?
It helps by keeping you honest. Practice without a record drifts toward throwing at treble 20 because it is enjoyable, and a tracked routine forces you through the parts you avoid. The record is the discipline as much as the measurement.
How long should a practice session be?
Shorter and more frequent beats long and occasional. Accuracy degrades with fatigue, and practising tired reinforces a deteriorating action. Twenty to thirty focused minutes most days does more than a long session once a week.
