What each number means

Turn happens early, fade happens late
That single fact explains the whole shape. Turn is high-speed behaviour, so it acts while the disc is still moving fast — the first half of the flight. Fade is low-speed behaviour and takes over as the disc slows. A disc with both goes right, then comes back left, and the S-curve is simply those two phases overlapping.
It also explains why a disc thrown slower than its speed rating acts more overstable, not less. It never reaches the airspeed the turn was designed for, so the turn phase barely happens at all and the fade arrives early. That is why a fast driver in a new player's hand simply dives left.
Things worth knowing
- Turn happens early and fade happens late. That is the whole reason a disc can go right and then left in one flight, and it is what the four numbers are actually describing.
- Throwing a disc slower than its speed rating makes it act MORE overstable, not less. It never reaches the airspeed its turn was designed for, so the turn barely happens and the fade arrives early — which is why a high-speed driver in a new player’s hand just dives left.
- A headwind also makes a disc act more overstable, because the disc’s airspeed is higher than its ground speed. A tailwind does the reverse and will flip an understable disc over completely.
- Flight numbers are the manufacturer’s, and they are not standardised between manufacturers. Treat them as a description of one company’s own range rather than as a measurement.
- The same mould flies differently in different plastics, and every disc gets more understable as it wears. A beaten-in disc is a different disc, which is why people hoard them.
- Most players carry discs that are too fast for them. A putter or a midrange thrown properly beats a distance driver thrown badly at anything under about 250 feet.

What is an understable disc?
One with a negative turn number, which drifts right for a right-handed backhand during the fast part of the flight. At −4 or −5 it will turn all the way over and roll, which is sometimes exactly what you want.
Are flight numbers standardised?
No. They are the manufacturer’s own description of their own range, and the same numbers from two companies do not fly the same. Treat them as relative rather than absolute.
Does the same disc always fly the same?
No. Different plastics of the same mould fly differently, and every disc gets more understable as it wears in. A beaten disc is genuinely a different disc, which is why players hoard the ones that have aged well.
