About these disc golf tools
The flight numbers printed on a disc describe how it behaves when thrown at the speed it was designed for, and that is the part beginners are not told. A high-speed driver rated for a professional arm, thrown at an amateur arm speed, never reaches the regime where its stability numbers apply — it simply fades out early and lands short and left, and the thrower concludes they need something faster still. The opposite is true. Slower discs fly further for slower arms, and a player who moves down in speed usually gains distance immediately. The numbers themselves are also not a standard. Speed, glide, turn and fade are manufacturer conventions rather than measurements against a common rig, so a 9 speed from one company is not necessarily a 9 speed from another, and the same mould in a different plastic flies differently again. They are useful for comparing within a brand and unreliable across brands. The second thing worth knowing is that stability shifts as a disc wears. A disc beats in with use — the rim rounds slightly, the flight plate softens — and it turns progressively more, so the disc you have thrown for two seasons is not the disc you bought. Many players deliberately keep worn and fresh copies of the same mould for that reason. The third is that wind acts on airspeed rather than ground speed, so a headwind makes a disc behave as though it were thrown faster, turning it over, and a tailwind makes it behave as though thrown slower, fading it out early. That is backwards from how most people expect wind to work.
