Low VLT means a dark lens

Visible Light Transmission is the percentage of light the lens lets through, so the number runs backwards from how people expect: a 10% lens is very dark and a 70% lens is nearly clear. It is also the only goggle specification that means anything across brands — tint names are marketing, and two lenses both called "rose" can be twenty points apart.

If you buy one lens, buy something in the middle. A 25–45% lens is merely acceptable in bright sun and merely acceptable in flat light, which beats a specialist lens that is excellent on the six days a year it suits and unusable the rest of the time.

Things worth knowing before you buy

  • VLT is the only goggle number that compares across brands. Tint names are marketing, and two lenses called "rose" from different makers can be twenty points apart.
  • Snow reflects a great deal of the ultraviolet that hits it, so you get it from below as well as above. Eye protection on snow is not only about comfort, and that applies on overcast days too.
  • Polarised lenses cut glare off wet snow, and they also make it harder to pick out ice — the sheen that gives an icy patch away is exactly what polarisation removes. Plenty of instructors avoid them for that reason.
  • Photochromic lenses shift across a range rather than sitting at one VLT, which solves the changeable-day problem at a cost. They are slower to darken in the cold than in a shop.
  • A second lens is cheaper than a second pair of goggles and covers far more days than an expensive single lens ever will.

What is VLT?

Visible light transmission — the percentage of light the lens lets through. Low figures around 5 to 20 per cent suit bright sun on snow; high figures above about 60 per cent suit flat light, storms and night skiing. It is the single most useful number on a goggle lens.

Why is flat light so hard to ski in?

Because overcast light removes shadows, and shadows are how you read the shape of the snow. Without them, bumps and dips become invisible until you hit them. A high-contrast lens in yellow, rose or amber helps by amplifying what little contrast remains — it does not add light so much as separate what is there.

What is the problem with polarised lenses?

They cut glare by removing light reflected off flat surfaces — which is exactly the light that makes ice visible. Polarised goggles can make an icy patch look like ordinary snow, which is why many skiers avoid them on the mountain despite their being excellent for water and driving.

Do I need more than one lens?

If you ski in varied conditions, yes, and interchangeable lens systems exist for this reason. A single mid-range lens is a compromise that is adequate in most conditions and ideal in none. Photochromic lenses adapt across a range and are a reasonable single-lens answer.

Does lens colour matter separately from VLT?

Yes, though VLT matters more. Rose, amber and yellow tints enhance contrast in flat light; grey tints preserve colour accuracy in bright conditions. Mirror coatings mainly reduce transmission further and affect the underlying tint less than they appear to.

Do I need protection from ultraviolet?

Always, and it is not optional at altitude. Snow reflects a large share of ultraviolet, and it increases with elevation, so exposure on a bright day on the mountain is far higher than at sea level. Any reputable goggle blocks it fully regardless of tint — a dark lens without ultraviolet protection would be worse than none.
