About these snow sports tools

Slope angle is the single most useful number in avalanche terrain, and the dangerous band is narrower than people assume. Slab avalanches release overwhelmingly on slopes between 30 and 45 degrees, with the peak around 38. Below about 30 degrees a slab rarely has enough gravity component to overcome its own strength; above roughly 50, snow tends to sluff away continuously rather than accumulating into a slab in the first place. So the terrain that feels most inviting to ski — steep enough to be fun, not so steep as to be frightening — is precisely the terrain that slides. An inclinometer costs almost nothing and answers the question that eyeballing gets wrong, since people routinely underestimate a slope by five to ten degrees, which is most of the width of the band. The second thing worth knowing is that you can trigger a slope you are not standing on. Slabs propagate, so a person on flat ground below or on a low-angle bench can collapse a weak layer that fails upslope and brings the whole thing down on them. Terrain traps matter for the same reason — a small slide that would be survivable in the open is lethal if it funnels into a gully or piles up behind a terrain feature. The third is that cold snow is slower, not faster. Ski glide depends on a microscopically thin water layer generated by friction, and below roughly minus ten degrees that layer barely forms, so very cold days feel sticky no matter what wax is on the base.
