Ice Thickness Safety Guide
The standard ice-safety minimums with a thickness checker — clear-ice rules, the white-ice half rule, and why no ice is ever truly safe.
⚠ No ice is ever 100% safe. These minimums assume new, clear, solid ice — the strongest kind. White or snow-saturated ice carries roughly half the load: double every number. Ice is never uniform; check thickness with a spud bar or auger every 150 feet, avoid current, springs, and inflowing streams, and never go alone.
These are the standard minimums published by state natural-resources agencies for new clear ice. Early and late season ice is weakest even at the same thickness. If you go through: turn toward where you came from (that ice held you), kick and pull onto the edge, roll away, and get dry immediately — hypothermia is the clock.

What are the standard minimums?
For new clear ice: around 4 inches for a person on foot, 5 to 7 for a snowmobile or ATV, 8 to 12 for a car, and 12 to 15 for a medium truck. These are widely published figures for solid clear ice and assume you have measured, not estimated.
What is the white ice rule?
White or opaque ice — refrozen slush, or ice with air trapped in it — is roughly half the strength of clear ice, so you need about twice the thickness for the same load. Grey ice usually indicates water present and should be treated as unsafe at any thickness.
Is any thickness genuinely safe?
No, and every agency that publishes these figures says so. Ice thickness varies dramatically across a single body of water — currents, springs, inflows, decaying vegetation and anything dark absorbing sunlight all thin it locally. A measurement at one point tells you about that point.
What makes ice unpredictable?
Moving water beneath it, which prevents even freezing; pressure ridges and cracks; snow cover, which insulates and slows freezing while hiding what is below; and any structure, dock or stump conducting heat. Early and late season are the most dangerous times, and the least visibly different.
What should I carry?
Ice picks worn where you can reach them, a throw rope, a flotation suit or life jacket, a spud bar to test ahead, and a phone in a waterproof case. Going with someone else, spread out rather than clustered, is the single most effective precaution.
What do I do if someone goes through?
Do not walk to them — reach, throw or go with something that floats, and call emergency services first. Someone in cold water has a limited window before they cannot grip a rope, so throwing something that reaches them quickly matters more than getting close.
