About these hunting & fishing tools
The line breaks at the knot, essentially always, and by more than people expect. A knot introduces sharp bends and pressure points into a material engineered to be loaded straight, so a well-tied knot in monofilament typically retains 80 to 95 per cent of the line’s rated strength and a badly tied one can retain half. That means a spool marked 20 lb test is a 10 lb system if the knot is poor, and no amount of drag adjustment compensates. It also means the single highest-value skill in fishing is tying one knot properly and consistently rather than knowing twelve. Wetting the line before drawing a knot down matters for the same reason: friction during tightening generates enough heat to damage monofilament, and the damage is invisible. The second thing worth knowing is that line test ratings are not a promise. Some lines are rated as a minimum breaking strength and others as a class rating that guarantees the line breaks BELOW the number, which is the opposite convention, and the two are sold side by side. The third, on the hunting side, is that a rifle zeroed at a given distance crosses the line of sight twice — once on the way up and once coming down — so a rifle zeroed at 200 yards is also on target at around 50, and shoots high in between. That mid-range rise is small on a flat-shooting cartridge and very much not small on others, and it is the reason a close shot can miss high from a rifle that is perfectly sighted in.
