The disclaimer above says this is for entertainment. Here is what that means in numbers, worked out from the scoring code rather than asserted. Every question has 4 options, so guessing gets one in 4 right. 20 questions at those odds averages 5 correct, which the formula turns into 93.75 and displays as 94. That lands in the "Average" band.

So 77.5% of people answering at random are told they are Average or better. The spread is a binomial one — a standard deviation of 1.94 questions, or 5.33 points on the reported scale. The top of the scale is a different story: 0.394% of guessers reach "High average" and essentially none go past it — reaching "Superior" by luck alone is roughly a one-in-a-quarter-of-a-million event. The scale discriminates at the top and barely at all at the bottom.
What the number is actually made of
The figure is 80 plus 55 times the fraction you got right. With 20 questions that makes each correct answer worth exactly 2.75 points, and the whole scale runs from 80 to 135 — 21 possible outcomes and nothing in between them.

The bands are not equal sizes. "Average" covers 7 of the 21 possible scores while the narrowest covers 3, so the middle of the scale is more than twice as forgiving as the top of it. The band boundaries sit at 4, 11, 15 and 18 correct. Land on one of those and a single lucky guess moves you up a whole description.
One band cannot happen at all
"Below average" is defined as under 80, and the formula's floor is exactly 80. Get every single question wrong and the quiz reports 80 and calls it "Low average". The band exists in the code and no answer sheet can reach it. The safety limits have the same problem from the other side: the score is held between 70 and 145, and the formula can only produce 80 to 135. Neither limit has ever done anything, and neither can.
None of this makes the quiz worthless — it makes it a 20-question multiple-choice quiz, which is what the warning above already says. Arithmetic just puts a number on how much of the output comes from the questions and how much from the scale they are printed on. A real assessment uses far more items, timed and untimed sections, and a population sample to calibrate against, which is why it takes a professional an afternoon rather than a browser four minutes.

Is this a real IQ test?
No, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise. A genuine assessment is administered by a trained psychologist, takes an hour or more, covers several distinct cognitive domains, and is normed against a large representative sample. Twenty pattern questions in a browser is a puzzle quiz with a number attached.
What does an IQ score actually mean?
It is a relative position, not an absolute quantity. Scores are scaled so the population average is 100 with a standard deviation of 15, which means about two thirds of people fall between 85 and 115 by construction. The number describes where you sit in a distribution, not how much of something you have.
Do IQ tests measure intelligence?
They measure performance on particular kinds of reasoning task, which correlates with some outcomes and not others. What they do not capture is substantial — creativity, judgement, practical skill, persistence, social understanding and domain expertise all sit outside. The debate about what the correlation means is genuinely unsettled and older than most of the tests.
Why do I score better the second time?
Practice effects, which are large and well documented. Familiarity with the question formats improves scores independently of anything else, which is why real assessments have strict rules about retesting intervals and why online scores drift upward with exposure.
Are online IQ tests trustworthy?
As entertainment, fine. As measurement, no — they are unnormed, self-selected in who takes them, and frequently designed to flatter. Any site charging to reveal your score is selling you a number it made up, and the business model is the tell.
What if I want a genuine assessment?
See a qualified psychologist. It costs real money and takes real time, and it is worth doing when there is a specific reason — an educational assessment, a diagnostic question, an occupational requirement. Curiosity alone is usually better served by a puzzle book.
