Which kayak type suits you, and whether your load is genuinely within capacity — not merely still afloat, which is a different question.
Stated capacity is not usable capacity
The number on the brochure is the load at which the boat still floats, not the load at which it still paddles. Loaded to its stated maximum a kayak sits low, wallows, loses speed and gives up the freeboard you need the moment a wave or a wake arrives.
The widely used rule is to stay at or under about 70 percent of it. That is what this page treats as the practical limit, and it is why a 350-pound boat is not a boat for a 300-pound load.

Length buys speed, width buys stability
Look down the table and the trade is visible in the data: as boats get longer they get narrower. A long narrow hull tracks straight and holds speed; a short wide one turns instantly and feels solid underneath you. You cannot have both, and every kayak is a decision about which one you want more.
The mistake worth avoiding is buying for the trip you imagine rather than the one you will actually take. Most people who buy a sea kayak for expeditions spend their weekends on flat water, where a day-touring boat would have been faster to load, easier to store and more fun.
Weight on land counts too. A boat you cannot lift onto the car by yourself is a boat you will paddle less. That consideration decides more purchases than hull speed ever should, and it is the one nobody mentions in the shop.

Frequently asked questions
What does the stated capacity actually mean?
Usually the load at which the boat still floats with some freeboard — not the load at which it handles well. Performance degrades long before the maximum, so loading to around two thirds of the figure is a common and much better target.
Why does overloading matter so much?
Because it sinks the hull deeper, which reduces freeboard, slows the boat, makes it wallow and greatly increases the chance of swamping in waves. A kayak at its rated maximum in flat water can be genuinely unsafe in chop.
What is the difference between primary and secondary stability?
Primary is how stable the boat feels sitting flat; secondary is how it behaves once leaned. Wide flat-bottomed boats feel very stable and then capsize abruptly; narrower rounded hulls feel tippy and hold a lean securely. Beginners often choose on primary and then outgrow it.
Does length matter more than width?
They do different things. Longer boats track straighter and go faster; shorter ones turn more readily and are easier to transport and store. Width is the main lever on stability, and it costs speed. There is no one correct set of numbers, only a set of trade-offs.
What should I consider besides capacity?
Where you will paddle. Sit-on-top boats suit warm water and easy recovery; sit-inside boats are drier and warmer and require knowing how to exit and re-enter. Sea kayaks, recreational boats and whitewater boats are genuinely different craft rather than variations.
What safety equipment is required?
A properly fitting buoyancy aid worn rather than stowed, at minimum, plus whatever the local regulations require — which frequently includes a sound signal and lights after dark. Cold water is the main hazard for kayakers, and immersion protection matters far more than most beginners expect.
