Why "between your chin and the top of your head" is bad advice

It is not wrong so much as useless — it describes a 30 centimetre range and gives you no way to pick within it. The useful version is that ability sets the position in that range and the terrain shifts it: a beginner wants a ski well below head height because a shorter ski turns more easily and forgives more, while an expert wants length for stability at speed.

Weight matters independently of height, and the old rule ignores it entirely. Two people of the same height who differ by 60 pounds flex a ski very differently, and the heavier one should be on a longer ski for the same terrain.

One modern caveat: rocker changes what a number means. A rockered powder ski has less edge in contact with the snow than its length suggests, so it skis shorter than it measures. That is why powder skis are sized up rather than down, which reads as backwards until you have stood on one.

Why is weight more important than height for a snowboard?

Because the board has to flex correctly under you, and flex is a response to load rather than to how tall you are. The old chin-to-nose height rule persists and is a poor guide — two riders of the same height and very different weights need different boards.

What does length actually change?

Stability against manoeuvrability. Longer skis and boards are more stable at speed and float better in soft snow; shorter ones turn more easily and are more forgiving of mistakes. Neither is better in general, and the right answer depends on how and where you ride.

Should beginners size down?

Usually a little, yes. Shorter equipment is easier to turn and less punishing of poor technique, which speeds learning. The trade is less stability at speed, which matters less at the point where you are still learning to turn reliably.

Does terrain change the answer?

Considerably. Powder and off-piste reward extra length for float; park riding rewards shorter for spin and control; carving on piste sits between. Waist width matters as much as length for powder, which is why a short wide board can float better than a long narrow one.

Does boot size affect anything?

For snowboards, yes — large boots on a narrow board cause toe and heel drag, where the boot contacts the snow mid-turn and catches. It is a genuine problem for riders with big feet, and board width rather than length is the fix.

Is a chart enough to choose?

As a starting range, yes. Demoing is what actually settles it, because construction, flex pattern and shape differ enormously between models at the same length. A stiff board and a soft one of identical length ride nothing alike.
