Age estimate
Two skills in one guide: jawbone aging (tooth replacement is exact through 2½; wear-based calls after that are honest to about ±1 year) and on-the-hoof body judging for live deer. The lab-grade method is cementum annuli — counting growth rings in a tooth cross-section like a tree. Biologists themselves disagree past 4½; anyone confidently calling a wild buck "7½" from a trail-cam photo is storytelling.
Two different methods wearing one list
The 6 classes look like one continuous scale. They are not. The early ones rest on tooth replacement — which teeth have erupted, whether the third premolar still shows three cusps or has been swapped for the two-cusped permanent one. That is a discrete, datable event: a tooth has either come in or it has not, and the answer does not depend on the ground the deer walked on. The later ones rest on tooth wear, which is continuous, gradual and heavily dependent on diet and soil.

They do not interleave: the replacement classes come first and the 3 wear-only classes after. The handover is at 2½ years, and the guide's own note for that class names it — "Tooth replacement is done — from here on, aging means judging wear, and the error bars grow."

4 one-year buckets, then a 2-year bucket, then 1 that is open-ended — and the drop happens after the method handover, not before it. That is not an accident of presentation. It is the honest response to a technique whose precision runs out: by 3½ the guide claims ±1 year, and past 6½ it says plainly that wear cannot separate seven from ten.

Unhedged confidence appears only in the 2 replacement-based classes; hedging appears in 3, all of them from the handover onward. The class at the boundary is the only one that is both — replacement is done, which is a settled fact, and the error bars grow, which is a warning. The last class disclaims the method outright and points at a lab.
Worth noticing, because plenty of aging charts present a 7½ and an 8½ class with exactly the same confidence as the yearling one.
The jaw is the evidence; the body is the proxy
Every class carries both a jaw description and a body description, and the jaw gets more words in 4 of the 6 — 559 characters against 523. That ordering is the point: the jaw is what actually indexes age, and the body cues are the field proxy you use while the animal is still standing.
The proxy is also the part that fails first. Body shape is a rut-season phenomenon — the same buck in September and November reads as two different classes. Which is a reason to hold live calls loosely, and a reason the guide's most confident line is about the class you can call from the truck: the yearling, whose own note points out it is "the age class most often passed for another season."

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is tooth wear aging?
Reliable for the first two years, where tooth replacement rather than wear is the indicator, and progressively less so after that. Beyond about three and a half years, studies comparing the method against known-age deer have found substantial error — frequently a year or more, in either direction.
Why does accuracy fall off with age?
Because after the teeth have all erupted, aging depends on how worn they are, and wear rate depends on diet and soil. Deer on sandy or abrasive range wear teeth much faster than those on soft ground, so the same wear pattern means different ages in different places.
What is the most reliable indicator for young deer?
Tooth replacement, which follows a predictable schedule regardless of diet. A fawn has fewer teeth erupted; a yearling still shows a three-cusped third premolar that is replaced during the second year. These are structural changes rather than wear, which is why they are dependable.
Can antlers be used to age a deer?
No, and this is a persistent myth. Antler size reflects nutrition, genetics and health far more than age, and point counts have essentially no relationship to years. A well-fed young deer can outgrow an older one on poor range.
What is the actual reference standard?
Cementum annuli — counting growth layers in a tooth root under a microscope, in a laboratory. It is considerably more accurate than wear assessment and is what wear methods get validated against. It costs money and requires sending a tooth away, which is why field methods persist.
Is on-the-hoof aging reliable?
For broad classes, with experience. Body proportion, neck and brisket development, and belly line give reasonable separation between young, middle-aged and mature animals. It is a skill built from seeing many deer, and even experienced observers disagree — which is why the honest output is a class rather than a number.
