Handicap
How the handicap works
It is built from your best recent rounds, not your average. With twenty rounds recorded the best eight count; with fewer, the sample shrinks so one good afternoon cannot define you. Below 3 rounds the figure is labelled provisional, because it genuinely is.
That is why playing to your handicap is hard: it represents your potential rather than your typical day. It also means recording the bad rounds matters — a handicap built only from the rounds you felt like logging flatters you, and the only person it fools is you.
What each score is called
| Against par | Name |
|---|---|
| hole in one | Ace |
| -3 | Albatross |
| -2 | Eagle |
| -1 | Birdie |
| even | Par |
| +1 | Bogey |
| +2 | Double bogey |
| +3 | Triple bogey |
A hole in one is an ace whatever the par. Calling a par-3 ace an eagle is technically defensible and socially wrong.
Things worth knowing
- This is adapted from the golf handicap system. The PDGA uses player ratings instead, and there is no official disc golf handicap — but the golf method does the job people actually want, which is a fair game between players of different standards.
- A handicap is built from your BEST recent rounds, not your average. That is deliberate: it represents your potential rather than your typical day, which is why playing to your handicap is genuinely hard.
- Three rounds is the minimum for anything meaningful and twenty is where it settles. Below three the figure moves wildly, and the tool says so rather than presenting a number it cannot support.
- Differentials here are simply score against par. A proper handicap system would adjust for course difficulty as well, which needs a course rating that disc golf does not consistently have.
- Record the bad rounds too. A handicap built only from the rounds you felt like logging is a handicap that flatters you, and the only person it fools is you.
How to use
- Set up the course and players.
- Enter scores as you play.
- Read the round summary and running handicap.
- Post every round, not only the good ones.
Frequently asked questions
How is a disc golf handicap calculated?
From your best recent rounds relative to course par, on the same principle as golf — a handicap represents potential rather than average, which is why most rounds are worse than it. The exact formula varies between systems and leagues.
Why post bad rounds?
Because a handicap built from selected rounds is not a handicap, and the person it misleads most is you when you enter a handicapped event. Since only the better rounds count anyway, a bad one has limited effect on the number.
What is a rating and how does it differ?
A rating measures the quality of a single round against how the field scored that day, adjusting for conditions, whereas a handicap summarises your recent standard. Rating systems used by disc golf organisations are considerably more involved than a simple handicap.
Does course difficulty get accounted for?
Only crudely by par alone, which is why courses need a difficulty adjustment for handicaps to be comparable between them. A round at par on a demanding course is a much better round than the same score somewhere easy.
Which statistics are worth tracking?
Circle one and circle two putting percentages, fairway hits and scramble rate tell you far more than the score alone. Scoring poorly with good putting points at a different problem from scoring poorly with good driving.
Where is my data stored?
In your browser on this device, so nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. It does not sync between devices and clearing browsing data removes it, so export a season's record if it matters.
