How it cuts, and how to solve it faster

  • Edges are decided per seam, not per piece. Roll each piece's four edges on its own and about half the pairs end up with two tabs pushing into each other, which draws as overlapping blobs. Each seam is rolled once and read from both sides, so every neighbouring pair interlocks by construction.
  • Start with the border. Flat edges only ever appear on the outside, so every flat-edged piece belongs on the rim and the four with two flats are the corners.
  • Sort the rest by colour before you try to place any of them. A picture with a big plain area is much harder than one with lots of texture, whatever the piece count says.
  • A piece snaps home when you drop it within about a quarter of a piece width, so you do not have to be precise — just close.
  • Show the picture puts a faint copy under the board. Turn it off for a proper puzzle.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The file is read in the page with the browser's own file reader, and the pieces are cut from it in memory.

Does my image get uploaded?

No. The picture is read and cut into pieces entirely in your browser, so it never leaves your device. That matters for family photographs and anything else you would not hand to a website.

What is the best way to start?

Edges and corners first, since they are identifiable by shape alone and give you a frame to work within. After that, sort by colour and by distinctive features rather than working piece by piece — grouping is what makes a large puzzle tractable.

Which images make good puzzles?

Ones with varied colour and detail spread across the whole picture. Large areas of uniform sky or plain background are the hardest part of any puzzle, since shape becomes the only clue. A busy, colourful image is much more forgiving.

How many pieces should I choose?

Twelve to twenty-four for a quick puzzle or for children, around fifty for something absorbing without being long, and the higher counts when you want a genuine sitting. Difficulty rises faster than the piece count, because each piece has more possible neighbours to check.

Why do physical jigsaws have those particular shapes?

So that pieces interlock and stay put once assembled, which was an improvement on early jigsaws cut into plain shapes that slid apart. The familiar tab-and-blank pattern came with die-cutting in the early twentieth century and has barely changed since.

Are digital jigsaws easier?

Generally yes. Pieces snap when close, nothing gets lost under the sofa, and you can restart instantly. What is lost is the tactile part — turning a piece over in your hand and feeling whether it fits is a real part of the appeal for many people.
