About these non-competitive games tools
Without a score to chase, what makes a game hold up is whether it feels fair and whether it stays interesting, and both are stranger than they look. People reliably misjudge randomness: a genuinely random sequence is far streakier than intuition allows, so honest randomness reads as rigged. In a hundred coin flips, a run of six or more identical faces is more likely than not, and a shuffle that plays two tracks by the same artist in a row is usually working correctly. Plenty of games quietly use distributions that are LESS random in order to feel fairer — spreading rare events out, or guaranteeing one within a window — because matching expectation beats matching probability when the point is enjoyment. The second thing is that difficulty has to track ability or the game dies: too easy is boring, too hard is frustrating, and the band between them is narrower and moves faster than most designs allow for. A puzzle that was absorbing on the first attempt is often trivial on the third, which is why the games that last are usually the ones that generate a fresh problem rather than the ones with a fixed set of levels.
