What the air actually feels like at road speed, and the layers that match it — because 50°F at 60 mph is not 50°F.

Dress for the speed, not the thermometer
A rider never experiences the air temperature. At 60 mph, 50°F air feels like 39°F, and 35°F air at 70 mph feels like 16°F. That is the number your gear has to handle, and it is why a jacket that is perfectly comfortable in the car park is cold twenty minutes down the road.
This uses the 2001 North American wind chill formula, which is defined for 50°F and below — exactly the range where it matters. Above that it is reported as the plain air temperature, because moving air stops being the thing making you cold and starts being the thing keeping you cool.

All the bands
Mesh only works while you are moving. In stop-start traffic a vented jacket is an oven, and dehydration degrades judgement long before it feels like a problem.
The comfortable band, and the one where people ride in a t-shirt. Abrasion resistance does not care what the temperature is.
A gaiter is worth more than its size suggests — the gap at the collar feeds cold air straight down the torso.
The point where hands start losing dexterity first. Bar muffs or heated grips buy more comfort per pound than any jacket upgrade.
Below this, comfort stops being the issue and reaction time becomes one. Cold hands cannot work a brake lever precisely, and cold judgement is slow.
Electrically heated gear is the only thing that really works here, because no passive insulation keeps up with hours of wind. Watch for ice in shaded corners and on bridges, which freeze before the road does.
Things worth knowing
- The temperature that matters is the one at road speed, not the one on the thermometer. Fifty degrees at 65 mph feels like the high thirties, and it is that number you should be dressing for.
- Wind gets in at the gaps. A jacket that is warm standing still can be cold at speed simply because the collar, cuffs and waist are open — sealing those is cheaper than a warmer jacket.
- Cold hands are a safety problem before they are a comfort problem. Fine control of a brake and clutch lever goes first, and it goes without you noticing.
- Layers beat one thick garment, because you can take one off. A single heavy jacket is either right or wrong and you cannot adjust it at the roadside.
- Windproof beats warm. A thin membrane that stops air moving through the fabric does more at speed than a thick fleece that lets it through.
- Watch bridges and shaded corners near freezing — they lose heat from both sides and ice up while the open road is still merely wet.
