River Rapid Class Reference (I–VI)
The International Scale of River Difficulty explained by what each grade means for a swimmer — and why the same number differs between rivers.
The full scale
Fast-moving water with riffles and small waves.
Few obstructions, and the ones there are can be seen and avoided with minimal training. The river does the work and you steer.
If you swim: Risk to swimmers is slight, and self-rescue is straightforward.
Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels.
Occasional manoeuvring is needed, but rocks and medium waves are easily missed by a trained paddler. Channels are evident without scouting.
If you swim: Swimmers are seldom injured and group assistance, while helpful, is rarely needed.
Moderate, irregular waves that can be hard to avoid.
Complex manoeuvres in fast current and good boat control in tight passages. Strong eddies and powerful current effects. Scouting is advisable for inexperienced parties.
If you swim: Injuries while swimming are rare, self-rescue is usually easy, but group assistance may be required to avoid a long swim.
Intense, powerful but predictable rapids in turbulent water.
Demands precise boat handling. May feature large unavoidable waves and holes, or constricted passages requiring fast manoeuvres under pressure. A reliable eddy turn may be needed to scout, rest, or set up. Scouting is necessary the first time down.
If you swim: Risk of injury to swimmers is moderate to high, and water conditions make self-rescue difficult. Group assistance is often essential but requires practised skills. A strong roll is highly recommended.
Extremely long, obstructed or violent rapids.
Drops may contain large unavoidable waves and holes, or steep congested chutes with complex demanding routes. What eddies exist may be small, turbulent or hard to reach. Several of these in a row may add up to long stretches with no margin for error. Scouting is recommended but often difficult.
If you swim: Swims are dangerous and rescue is often difficult even for experts. Proper equipment, extensive experience and practised rescue skills are essential.
Runs that exemplify the extremes of difficulty.
Almost never attempted, and only by teams of experts after close study, with all precautions taken and at favourable water levels. The unpredictability and danger are of a different order.
If you swim: The consequences of errors are very severe and rescue may be impossible.
A grade is not a fixed property of a river
- The grade is not a fixed property of the river — it is a property of the river at a water level. A III at low summer flow can be a solid IV after rain, and the same rapid at very high water can be class V or simply unrunnable.
- Grades are also regional. A III in one region is a IV in another, and older guidebooks tend to grade harder than modern ones. Treat a number from an unfamiliar source as a starting point, not a specification.
- Cold water raises every grade in practice. It shortens how long a swimmer stays useful, and hypothermia turns a nuisance swim into an incident faster than difficulty alone ever does.
- The rating describes the rapid, not the consequence. A class III above a weir, a strainer or a long gorge is a far more serious proposition than a class IV with a big friendly pool below it.
Reading the scale honestly
The jump people underestimate is III to IV. Class III is where mistakes are survivable and the river forgives a missed line; class IV introduces moves you have to make, water that will hold you if you get them wrong, and rescues that need practised skills rather than good intentions. It is not one step, it is a change in what the sport is.
The scale describes the rapid, and says nothing about what is downstream of it. A class III above a weir, a strainer or a long committing gorge is a more serious proposition than a class IV with a big friendly pool below — and the grade will not tell you which one you are looking at. That judgement comes from scouting, local knowledge and people who know the river.

Frequently asked questions
What do the grades actually mean?
Class I is moving water with few obstructions and Class VI is at the limit of what has been run at all, with the intermediate grades describing increasing difficulty, consequence and rescue difficulty. What matters more than the number is what the grade says about swimming it, which is where consequence really lives.
Is a Class III the same on every river?
No, and treating the scale as absolute is a genuine hazard. Grades are relative within a region and shift with water level, temperature, remoteness and how long a rescue would take. A Class III in a cold remote canyon carries more consequence than a Class IV on a warm roadside run.
Why does water level change the grade?
Because volume changes everything about a rapid — features wash out or form, hydraulics strengthen, eddies disappear and the consequences of a swim lengthen. A run that is a pleasant Class II at low water can be a serious Class IV in flood, and the guidebook grade usually assumes a normal level.
What is the most dangerous feature?
Strainers — trees and debris that let water through and not people — kill more paddlers than any drop. Undercut rocks and foot entrapment in shallow moving water are the other two that account for a disproportionate share of fatalities, and none of them are about difficulty in the usual sense.
What should I do if I swim?
Get on your back with feet downstream and up, to fend off rocks and avoid foot entrapment, and swim aggressively to the side when you have a target. Standing up in moving water above knee depth is what causes entrapment, and it is the instinct that has to be trained out.
Is reading about this enough preparation?
No. Swiftwater rescue training, going with people who know the run, and scouting are what make river running reasonably safe. This page explains a scale; it does not teach anyone to read water, and the difference between the two is where accidents happen.
