Why volume replaced length

Length tells you almost nothing on its own. A thick six-foot board and a thin six-six can float you identically, which is why every shaper now prints volume on the stringer and why "what length should I ride" is close to an unanswerable question.

The figure is your weight in kilograms times a coefficient set by ability. That is the whole calculation, and the ability coefficient does far more work than most people expect — a beginner and an expert of identical weight are separated by roughly a factor of three.

The common mistake is riding too little volume. Under-volumed boards do not make you better; they stop you catching waves, and you cannot improve at surfing without catching waves. Almost nobody consulting a volume calculator belongs in the expert band, and riding one anyway is the most reliable way to surf worse than you actually can.

The ability bands

Beginner — still learning to stand and catch waves 0.9 – 1.2 Float is everything at this stage. A board that paddles easily and catches waves early is what lets you practise standing up, and there is no benefit whatsoever to riding something short and twitchy.
Intermediate — riding along the face, turning 0.55 – 0.7 Enough volume to paddle into waves comfortably, little enough that the board turns when you ask it to. Most surfers stay in this band for years and should.
Advanced — confident in most conditions 0.38 – 0.5 A performance board that rewards good paddling fitness and punishes a lazy takeoff. The drop from intermediate is larger than it looks on paper.
Expert — surfing daily, competitive level 0.32 – 0.4 Minimum float for maximum response. Worth saying plainly: almost nobody reading a volume calculator belongs here, and riding an expert volume is the most common way to surf worse than you can.

Frequently asked questions

Why is volume the useful number?

Because it captures how much float a board has in a single figure, where length, width and thickness individually do not. Two boards of the same length can differ enormously in volume and therefore in how they paddle, which is why shapers now print it.

What volume should I ride?

A percentage of your body weight in kilograms, varying with ability — beginners commonly want well over 100 per cent, intermediates somewhere below it, and experienced surfers considerably less. The honest input is ability, and most people overestimate theirs.

Why is riding too little volume so common?

Because short low-volume boards look like what good surfers ride, and buying one feels like an upgrade. What it actually delivers is fewer waves caught, more paddling, and slower improvement — you learn by riding waves, and a board that catches more of them teaches faster.

Does fitness change the answer?

Substantially. Paddle fitness determines how much you can compensate for low volume, so someone surfing twice a week can ride noticeably less than the same surfer after a winter off. Adjusting upward after a layoff is sensible rather than a step backwards.

Should wave quality change my board?

Yes. Weak, soft or small waves demand more volume to get moving, while powerful waves provide the push themselves and reward a smaller board that holds in. Riding one board in all conditions means it is wrong for some of them.

Is a longer board just easier?

Easier to paddle and catch waves on, and harder to turn or duck-dive. The trade is real in both directions, and the common progression is to reduce volume gradually as paddling and wave selection improve — rather than jumping to a short board and stalling.
