Zodiac Compatibility Matcher

Pick two signs and get the traditional element-and-modality reading, with the reasoning shown — presented as tradition rather than prediction.

A birthday sets the sign for you — the page used to say any birthday maps to one and then ask you to work out which.

Scores come from the traditional element and modality logic astrologers actually use — fire feeds on air, earth holds water, fixed signs dig in, opposites attract across the wheel. Honesty corner: astrology has no scientific backing; compatibility comes from how two people treat each other. As a conversation starter, though, it is undefeated.

Every sign scores exactly the same on average

Working out all 144 pairings rather than one at a time turns up something the individual answers hide. Every sign's twelve scores add to exactly 815 — an average of 67.92 — and that is true of all twelve without exception. No sign is luckier than another, and no element is either. The traditional element and modality logic is perfectly balanced by construction, which is not something any single reading would ever show you.

Two more things fall out of the grid. There are only 5 distinct scores in the whole thing — 50, 60, 75, 80, 85 — so the percentage on the card above is one of five answers wearing a lot of decimal places' worth of confidence. The grid is also perfectly symmetric, so asking in the other order never changes anything. And no sign's best match is itself: a sign paired with its own gets 80, while the best score on the board is 85. Those 85s are the same-element, different-modality pairs — the classic trines — which is the one place the traditional scheme and the popular idea that you should date your own sign part company.

How to use

  1. Pick the two signs.
  2. Read the traditional reading and the reasoning behind it.
  3. Note which element and modality each belongs to.
  4. Take it as a conversation starter, not guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Is there evidence for astrological compatibility?

No. Studies looking for a relationship between sun signs and relationship outcomes have consistently found nothing, including large analyses of marriage and divorce records. This page presents the traditional system as tradition, because that is what it is.

Then why do the readings feel accurate?

Largely the Barnum effect — general statements that could describe almost anyone are consistently rated as personally accurate, especially when they are flattering. Astrological descriptions are written broadly for exactly that reason, which is why people recognise themselves in the wrong sign's reading just as readily.

What are the elements and modalities?

The traditional framework: each sign belongs to one of four elements — fire, earth, air, water — and one of three modalities — cardinal, fixed, mutable. Compatibility readings are largely derived from those groupings, which is why signs sharing an element are conventionally described as harmonious.

Does the sun sign capture much even within astrology?

Astrologers themselves say no. A full chart involves the positions of many bodies and the houses, and sun-sign astrology is a twentieth-century newspaper simplification. Criticising astrology through sun signs alone is arguing with the simplified version, which is worth acknowledging either way.

Is there harm in it?

As a pastime, no, and it is a perfectly good conversation starter. It becomes a problem when someone makes a consequential decision because of it — ending a relationship, or declining one, on the basis of a birth date is a real thing that happens.

Why include it at all?

Because it is a widely known tradition that people enjoy, and presenting it accurately with the reasoning shown is better than presenting it credulously or not at all. Being clear about what it is seemed preferable to pretending.
