Avalanche Slope Angle & Danger Guide

Why 30 to 45 degrees is the slab range, how far debris really runs out, and why Considerable kills the most people.

This is a reference, not training and not a forecast. Before travelling in avalanche terrain you need a course, a current local forecast read that morning, a transceiver, probe and shovel, and partners carrying the same who know how to use them.

None of this is a substitute for an avalanche course. A recreational Level 1 is two or three days, is widely available wherever there is snow, and teaches the two things a page cannot: how to read a snowpack in front of you, and how to run a companion rescue under time pressure. Burial survival drops sharply after about fifteen minutes, so the rescue is always going to be done by your partners, not by a helicopter.

Thirty to forty-five degrees

Slab avalanches concentrate almost entirely between 30 and 45 degrees, and fatal accidents peak around 38. Below 30 the snow is not steep enough to slide on its own; above 45 it sluffs so continuously that deep slabs struggle to form. In between is where the snow both holds and fails.

Which is the uncomfortable part: that is also the angle that makes the best skiing. The terrain people want and the terrain that kills them are the same terrain, and no amount of knowing the number changes the pull of a good-looking slope.

Two things people get wrong about angle. It varies a great deal across a single face, so measure the steepest part rather than eyeballing an average from below — an inclinometer or a phone app takes seconds. And a shallow slope is not automatically safe: you can trigger a steeper slope connected above you, and flat ground beneath a steep face is a runout zone, not a refuge.

The danger scale

Dangerous avalanche conditions, and the level at which more people are killed than any other. It is the danger rating where the terrain still looks appealing and the snowpack no longer is. Careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route-finding and conservative decisions are essential.
4 — High Natural avalanches likely, human-triggered avalanches very likely.
Large avalanches in many areas, or very large avalanches in specific areas.
Very dangerous conditions. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Stay well back from runout zones, which extend further than they look.
5 — Extreme Natural and human-triggered avalanches certain.
Very large to historic avalanches in many areas.
Avoid all avalanche terrain. On these days avalanches run into places that have no history of sliding, and valley roads and buildings are not automatically outside the runout.

Considerable is highlighted for a reason. More people are killed at level 3 than at any other rating, and it is not because it is the most dangerous — it is because it is the rating where the terrain still looks appealing and the snowpack no longer is. High and Extreme days keep people at home. Considerable days do not.

The part that is not about snow

Accident reports overwhelmingly involve people who had the training and the gear. What went wrong was a decision, and the same handful of pressures show up again and again.

Familiarity: The slope you have skied fifty times feels safe because it has never slid, which is not evidence about today. Most accidents happen on familiar terrain.

Commitment: Having driven four hours, booked the day, or told everyone the plan makes turning back expensive in a way that has nothing to do with the snowpack.

Expert halo: A group defers to whoever seems most experienced, and that person is often not making a decision so much as being watched making one.

Social proof: Tracks on a slope prove that somebody else got away with it, not that the slope is stable. Every buried person was on a slope that had held moments earlier.

Scarcity: First tracks, the last good day, a rare window of visibility. Competition for a limited resource reliably makes groups accept risk they would otherwise decline.

Acceptance: Wanting to be seen as capable by the group, which affects newer members and mixed-ability groups most, and is rarely spoken aloud.

The kit, and why

  • A transceiver, worn under a layer and switched to transmit — checked at the trailhead, every time.
  • A probe, because a beacon narrows the search to a few metres and a probe finds the body within it.
  • A metal shovel. Avalanche debris sets like concrete within minutes and a plastic blade will not move it.
  • Partners who carry all three and know how to use them. Gear on your own back saves nobody — every rescue is performed by the people still on the surface.
  • Current local forecast, read that morning. Conditions change overnight and a two-day-old forecast is a guess.
