Standard typical-frame scoring: everything adds to the gross; side-to-side differences deduct from the net (arithmetic unit-tested, including unmatched points deducting their full length). Camp-scoring rules of the road: measure to the nearest ⅛ inch along the outer curve, and know that official book entry requires a certified measurer after a 60-day drying period — green scores run a couple of inches proud.

The whole formula collapses to one line

Typical scoring computes a gross — spread, both beams, every point, every circumference — and then subtracts the side-to-side differences. That looks like two operations and it is not. For any paired measurement, (L + R) − |L − R| is just 2 × min(L, R). So:

net = spread + 2 × (the sum of the shorter side of every pair)

Which means the longer side is worth exactly nothing

Six inches of extra beam raises the gross by six and the net by zero — the deduction takes back precisely what the gross gave. The same is true of an unmatched point: an eleven-inch G5 with nothing opposite it changes the net not at all. In this framework a point with no partner is not a bonus that gets penalised; it is scored and unscored by the same number.

Spread is worth one because it is the only measurement that is not mirrored. Everything else is worth two if it lands on the shorter side and nothing if it lands on the longer one. Grow every left-hand point by four inches and the gross climbs 16 while the net does not move.

The practical version: a rack's typical score is decided entirely by its weaker antler. Judging the big side tells you the ceiling; judging the small one tells you the score.

The turkey card is a different shape entirely

Weight plus ten times each spur plus twice the beard. On a representative bird — 20 lb, 1.25″ spurs, a 10″ beard — that is 65 points:

The multipliers do the work. An inch of beard is 2 points; an inch on both spurs is 20 — 10× the leverage. A quarter-inch of spur is 5 points, which since weight is unmultiplied is the same as 5 pounds of bird. Spur length is the most leveraged number on the card and also the hardest to eyeball on a live one.

What this is not

This is the typical framework — the one that punishes asymmetry. Non-typical scoring exists precisely because the arithmetic above throws away everything interesting about a strange rack; it adds abnormal points instead of cancelling them. A rack that scores badly here is not a bad rack, it is a rack being measured by the wrong card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net score?

Gross adds all the measurements. Net subtracts the differences between corresponding measurements on the two sides, penalising asymmetry. Boone and Crockett records use net, which is why a large but uneven rack can score below a smaller symmetrical one.

Why penalise asymmetry?

Because the scoring system was designed to identify exceptional specimens, and symmetry is treated as part of that. It is a value judgement built into the system rather than a fact about the animal, and it is why some scoring systems — Safari Club International, for instance — do not deduct for it and produce higher numbers.

What is an abnormal point?

A point not arising from the main beam in the typical pattern for the species. In the typical category these are deducted; there is a separate non-typical category where they are added instead. Which category a rack belongs in is a judgement call that official scorers make.

Does my score count for the record book?

Not unless measured by an official scorer, after a mandatory drying period of 60 days, following the exact published procedure. Home scoring is for your own interest and for deciding whether an official measurement is worth pursuing.

Why does the drying period matter?

Because antlers shrink measurably as they dry, and a fresh rack scores higher than the same rack two months later. The 60-day requirement standardises this so entries are comparable, and a green score is routinely several points above the final one.

Is a higher score a better animal?

It is a bigger set of antlers, which is not the same claim. Score reflects nutrition, genetics, age and habitat quality, and says nothing about the hunt or the animal's condition. Treating it as the point rather than as a record-keeping convention is a matter of personal taste, and plenty of hunters do not score at all.
