Load rating is your total weight, not your body weight. That distinction is the single most common sizing mistake, and a winter pack is heavier than people remember.
Flotation is a trade, not a target
Bigger snowshoes float better and handle worse. On a narrow trail with switchbacks, tight trees, or any traversing, a smaller shoe you can actually turn beats a bigger one that sinks less — and the extra length catches on everything and clips your own ankles. Most people touring on packed and mixed snow are better served a size down from the chart.
The exception is genuinely deep unconsolidated powder, where undersized shoes mean breaking trail thigh-deep and a day that takes twice as long as planned. That is why the snow condition is an input here rather than a footnote: it moves the answer by a whole size.
What matters more than size
- Load rating means your total weight — body, clothing, boots, pack and everything in it. A 170 lb hiker with a 30 lb winter pack is a 200 lb load, and that is the number the chart wants.
- Longer means more flotation and less manoeuvrability. On a narrow trail with switchbacks, a smaller shoe you can actually turn beats a bigger one that floats better.
- Bindings and traction matter more than size on steep or icy ground. Heel lifts turn a punishing climb into a merely tiring one, and aggressive crampons are what stop a traverse becoming a slide.
- Poles with snow baskets are close to essential. Snowshoes change your balance more than people expect, and there is nothing to grab on the way down.

Frequently asked questions
How is snowshoe size decided?
By total load rather than body weight, since flotation depends on the weight pressing on the snow. A person carrying a heavy winter pack needs a larger shoe than the same person day-hiking, which is the factor most often left out.
Is a bigger snowshoe always better?
No, and this is the useful correction. Larger shoes float better in deep powder and are heavier, more tiring, awkward on packed trails and clumsy on steep or narrow ground. Many people are better served by a smaller shoe than the flotation charts suggest.
Does snow condition change the answer?
Substantially. Dense, wet or packed snow supports far more weight than cold dry powder, so the same person needs a much smaller shoe on a packed trail than in fresh snow. Buying for the deepest conditions you might meet produces an inconvenient shoe for the conditions you usually meet.
What matters besides size?
Traction and bindings, frequently more than flotation. Aggressive crampons and heel lifts transform steep terrain, and a binding that is easy to adjust with cold hands is worth a great deal. A well-bound shoe with good traction beats a larger one without.
Do I need poles?
For anything other than flat easy ground, they help considerably — with balance, with traversing slopes, and with getting up after a fall in deep snow, which is genuinely difficult without them. Baskets sized for snow matter, since summer trekking baskets sink.
Is avalanche risk a concern?
Wherever there is slope and snow, yes, and snowshoes give access to terrain that carries real risk. Travelling in avalanche terrain requires training, a transceiver, probe and shovel, and partners who know how to use them. Nothing about a snowshoe recommendation addresses that.
