The geometry is simple and merciless: a deer's nose beats every scent product ever sold. Hunt with the wind carrying your scent AWAY from where deer travel — the green arc — and plan your entry route through the same downwind side, because deer smell where you walked for hours. If the wind goes wrong for a stand, the season-saving move is not hunting it.

Two mental rotations that cancel

Working out whether a stand is safe takes two turns of the head. Wind coming from the north blows your scent toward the south — one 180° flip. And a stand bearing is measured from the deer's ground to the stand, so from the stand the deer are 180° the other way — a second flip.

Both are applied, and they cancel: adding 180 to two bearings does not change the angle between them. So the whole test collapses to how far the stand bearing is from the direction the wind is coming from — under 35° bad, 35 to 60° marginal, over 60° good. Checked against this page's own function across all 129,600 combinations: 0 disagreements.

The reasoning needs both flips to be right; the arithmetic does not need either. The version to carry at the truck: a stand is bad when the wind is coming from the direction the stand lies in. Deer south of you, wind out of the north, scent going straight to them.

Two-thirds of the circle is clean, which is more forgiving than the usual advice sounds. The 69° bad arc is the scent cone the page models — ±35° — and the marginal band is 25° on each side of it. Those counts follow from the thresholds rather than from counting, and they are the same whichever wind you pick.

A dead crosswind at 90° is good, and so is being straight downwind at 180° — which is the whole point of hunting downwind of a trail.

Because quality depends only on the angle between stand and wind, rotating both by the same amount changes nothing — verified at an arbitrary 37° across all 129,600 pairs, 0 mismatches. The compass rose is a single fixed pattern that spins with the wind, not a different diagram per direction: 5 bad cells, 2 marginal and 17 good, every time.

One wrinkle, and only a wrinkle. The rose is drawn in 24 cells of 15°. On a cell boundary the picture is a rigid rotation and the tally is always 5/2/17. Off it, the same underlying pattern gets sampled at an offset and the tally shifts — 5/3/16 or 4/4/16. That artefact is unreachable in practice: the page offers 8 wind directions and every one is a multiple of 45°, hence of 15°. Every rose you can actually produce is the rigid rotation.

Frequently asked questions

How far does scent carry?

Considerably further than most hunters assume, and it depends heavily on conditions. Scent travels furthest in steady wind, high humidity and cool air, and disperses faster in turbulent or thermally active conditions. The practical planning assumption is that anything downwind of you knows you are there.

What are thermals and why do they matter?

Air moving vertically with temperature. As the ground cools in the evening, air sinks and carries scent downhill; as it warms in the morning, air rises and carries it up. In hilly terrain thermals frequently override the prevailing wind at dawn and dusk — which is exactly when most hunting happens.

Does the access route matter as much as the stand?

Often more. Walking in through the area you intend to hunt leaves scent exactly where you least want it, and the stand's wind is irrelevant if you contaminated the approach an hour earlier. Planning the route is part of planning the stand.

Do scent-control products work?

Less than the marketing claims. Reducing scent is worthwhile and does not make you undetectable, and the evidence for complete elimination is weak. Playing the wind properly is far more effective than any product, and treating a product as a substitute for wind discipline is the mistake.

How many stands do I need?

Enough to have a usable option for each common wind direction, which is usually more than people set up. A single stand that only works on one wind sits unused most of the season, and hunting it on the wrong wind educates the animals rather than producing an opportunity.

Does swirling wind ruin a spot?

It makes it unpredictable, which is worse than a steady unfavourable wind because you cannot plan around it. Terrain features that channel and swirl wind — bowls, saddles, edges of dense cover — are worth identifying so you know which stands are unreliable rather than merely wrong.
